Machinist
Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Machinist to set up, operate, and maintain precision machine tools to produce high-quality components for our manufacturing operations. The ideal candidate will interpret engineering drawings, select appropriate tooling, and use jigs and fixtures to deliver accurate parts to tight tolerances while adhering to safety and quality standards. This role supports continuous improvement in machining processes and collaborates closely with tool and die makers, engineers, and production staff to meet production schedules.
Key Responsibilities
- Set up and operate CNC and manual mills, lathes, and other machine tools to manufacture precision components from metal and other materials.
- Read and interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, and specifications to determine machining sequences, tooling, and part tolerances.
- Select, install, and adjust cutting tools, jigs, fixtures, and workholding devices; prepare and maintain tool offsets and machine parameters.
- Perform precision measuring and inspection using calipers, micrometers, height gauges, dial indicators, and CMMs to verify conformance to specifications.
- Perform routine maintenance, troubleshooting, and minor repairs on machines and tooling to ensure safe and efficient operation.
- Collaborate with tool and die makers and engineers to develop and refine fixtures, jigs, and machining processes for improved quality and productivity.
- Document setup sheets, production logs, and inspection records; report non-conforming parts and participate in root-cause analysis and corrective actions.
- Follow safety protocols, maintain a clean work area, and participate in continuous improvement initiatives such as lean manufacturing and 5S.
- Train and mentor junior machinists and apprentices in best practices, machine operation, and quality standards.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED; vocational training or certificate in machining, tool and die, or a related field preferred.
- 3 years of hands-on experience as a machinist in a manufacturing environment, including experience with both CNC and manual machines.
- Proficiency with precision measuring instruments (calipers, micrometers, height gauges, dial indicators) and basic inspection techniques; experience with CMMs a plus.
- Strong knowledge of tooling, jigs, fixtures, workholding, feeds and speeds, and machining best practices.
- Experience with tool and die practices, fixture design, or collaboration with toolmakers preferred.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T), and engineering specifications.
- Working knowledge of machine setup, tooling selection, and preventive maintenance procedures.
- Good problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently and as part of a production team.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs, stand for extended periods, and work in a shop environment with required PPE.
