Position Overview
The Field Service Engineer will be responsible for installing, commissioning, maintaining and troubleshooting high-voltage equipment at customer sites, with a focus on transformers, substation equipment and associated control and cooling systems. This role combines electrical and mechanical skills to deliver safe, reliable field support, diagnostic evaluations and repairs, ensuring equipment uptime and customer satisfaction. The position requires frequent travel to client locations, clear documentation and strong communication with operations and engineering teams.
Key Responsibilities
- Install, commission and decommission power transformers, switchgear and substation equipment at customer sites according to manufacturers specifications and safety procedures.
- Perform preventative and corrective maintenance on high-voltage systems, including cooling systems, tap changers and related mechanical components.
- Conduct diagnostic evaluations and troubleshooting of electrical and control-system issues to isolate faults and restore service quickly and safely.
- Read, interpret and work from electrical schematics, wiring diagrams and technical manuals to carry out repairs, modifications and retrofits.
- Execute testing and calibration of protection relays, control systems and monitoring equipment using appropriate test instruments and procedures.
- Carry out mechanical repairs and alignments on equipment interfaces, pumps, fans and tap-changer assemblies; coordinate with workshop teams for complex mechanical work.
- Prepare clear, accurate service reports, test records and site documentation; update maintenance logs and recommend spare parts or upgrades.
- Provide technical support and training to customers and site personnel on operation, maintenance and safety practices.
- Adhere to all health, safety and environmental regulations and company policies while working on energized and de-energized equipment.
- Coordinate with engineering, sales and parts departments to expedite repairs, procure critical spares and support project handovers.
Qualifications
- Degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Engineering or equivalent technical diploma; or equivalent practical field experience.
- 3 years of field service experience with transformers, substation equipment and high-voltage systems preferred.
- Proven ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams and control logic.
- Hands-on experience with transformer cooling systems, tap changers and associated mechanical interfaces.
- Strong diagnostic and troubleshooting skills for electrical, mechanical and control-system issues.
- Experience with protection relays, control systems testing and commissioning procedures.
- Familiarity with electrical-mechanical repairs and preventive maintenance practices.
- Valid drivers license and willingness to travel frequently and work at customer sites, including occasional overnight stays.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to prepare technical reports and communicate with customers.
- Relevant safety certifications (e.g., HV safety, confined space, OSHA) and a commitment to working safely in high-voltage environments.
