Controls Engineer
Location: Onsite in Akron, OH
Pay: $80-125k DOE
Position Overview
We are seeking a motivated Controls Engineer to design, develop, and maintain industrial control systems for automated equipment and processes. The ideal candidate will lead control panel design, PLC/HMI programming, and system integration activities to ensure reliable, safe, and code-compliant operation. This role will collaborate with electrical, mechanical, and project teams to translate functional requirements into robust control solutions and support commissioning, troubleshooting, and continuous improvement efforts.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and develop control system architectures, including PLC, HMI, and network layouts to meet project specifications and performance goals.
- Program, test, and commission PLCs and HMIs (preferably Allen-Bradley/Rockwell and Siemens) for new and existing equipment.
- Create and review control panel designs and wiring schematics, ensuring compliance with NEC and UL standards.
- Develop and maintain documentation including control logic descriptions, I/O lists, ladder code comments, wiring diagrams, and FAT/SAT test procedures.
- Integrate communication protocols such as Modbus and Ethernet to connect PLCs, HMIs, drives, and other devices across networks.
- Collaborate with mechanical and electrical design teams using CAD/AutoCAD and SolidWorks models to ensure proper mechanical integration and panel layout.
- Troubleshoot and resolve control system issues on-site or remotely during installation and commissioning.
- Support procurement by specifying electrical and control components, evaluating vendor material, and reviewing submittals.
- Implement safety and control strategies in accordance with applicable codes and best practices; participate in hazard assessments and safety reviews.
- Provide technical support to customers and field service teams, offering training and guidance on system operation and maintenance.
Qualifications
- Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering, Control Systems Engineering, or related field, or equivalent experience.
- 3 years of hands-on experience in controls design, PLC programming, and panel fabrication for industrial automation projects.
- Proficiency with PLC platforms and toolsets, especially Allen-Bradley (ControlLogix, CompactLogix) and Siemens.
- Experience programming and configuring HMIs and operator interfaces; familiarity with Rockwell Studio 5000 and Siemens TIA Portal is a plus.
- Working knowledge of communication protocols such as Modbus and Ethernet/IP.
- Practical experience with electrical codes and standards, including NEC and UL requirements for control panels.
- Strong panel design skills and familiarity with AutoCAD, CAD tools, and SolidWorks for layout and documentation.
- Ability to read electrical schematics, create wiring diagrams, and assemble I/O lists.
- Experience with control system testing and commissioning, including FAT/SAT procedures.
