Position Overview
We are seeking a skilled Commercial HVAC Service Technician to install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair commercial heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems. The technician will perform preventative maintenance, diagnose complex system faults, and deliver high-quality service at commercial and industrial facilities. This role requires strong mechanical and electrical aptitude, excellent customer service skills, and the ability to work independently or as part of a service team.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform scheduled and emergency service calls to troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair commercial HVAC equipment including rooftop units (RTUs), package units, split systems, mini-splits, chillers, heat pumps, and cooling towers.
- Conduct preventative maintenance tasks such as filter changes, coil cleaning, lubrication, belt and motor inspections, refrigerant level checks, and system performance testing to maximize equipment life and efficiency.
- Use diagnostic tools and instrumentation (multimeters, gauges, refrigerant recovery machines, combustion analyzers, vibration analyzers) to identify electrical, mechanical, and refrigerant system issues.
- Read and interpret mechanical and electrical schematics, control wiring diagrams, manufacturer manuals, and building automation system (BAS) interfaces.
- Install, replace and retrofit HVAC components and controls, including motors, compressors, contactors, valves, sensors, and thermostats, following manufacturer specifications and safety codes.
- Recover, reclaim, and charge refrigerants in accordance with EPA regulations and store/label components per company procedures.
- Accurately document work performed in the service management system (work orders, parts used, time entries), prepare service reports, and communicate recommendations for repairs or upgrades to customers and account managers.
- Maintain a clean, safe work area and follow company safety policies and OSHA regulations; participate in on-call rotation and emergency response as required.
- Collaborate with project teams and other trades on larger installations or retrofits; assist with commissioning and startup of new equipment.
- Order parts and materials, maintain stock of common parts in service vehicle, and coordinate with vendors for specialty components.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required; HVAC technical certificate, associate degree, or trade school training preferred.
- 3 years of commercial HVAC service experience working on RTUs, package units, split systems, mini-splits, chillers, heat pumps, or cooling towers preferred.
- Strong troubleshooting and diagnostic skills for mechanical, electrical, and refrigeration systems; able to isolate root causes and perform permanent repairs.
- EPA 608 Certification for refrigerant handling required; NATE certification, manufacturer-specific certifications, or state HVAC license preferred.
- Proficient with HVAC tools and instrumentation, including manifold gauges, recovery machines, multimeters, and basic hand and power tools.
- Working knowledge of building automation systems (BAS), controls, and VFDs is a plus.
- Ability to read and interpret electrical/mechanical schematics, wiring diagrams, and service manuals.
- Comfortable performing physical tasks including lifting up to 50 lbs, climbing ladders, working on rooftops, and in confined spaces.
- Valid drivers license with a clean driving record and ability to travel to multiple job sites daily.
- Strong communication and customer service skills; reliable, organized, and able to work independently or as part of a team.
- Willingness to participate in on-call rotation and work occasional nights or weekends for emergency service.
- Familiarity with preventative maintenance programs, CMMS/work order software, parts procurement, and documentation best practices.
