Position Overview
We are seeking a skilled Controls Technician to install, commission, service and troubleshoot building automation and control systems in commercial facilities. The role focuses on commissioning, programming and diagnostics of BAS hardware and software (including Distech systems), performing repairs, optimizing control sequences, and delivering responsive field service to ensure HVAC and building systems operate safely and efficiently. The Controls Technician will work with engineers, project managers and clients to complete projects on time and maintain accurate documentation.
Key Responsibilities
- Install, wire and configure controllers, sensors, actuators and field devices for building automation systems in commercial buildings.
- Program, commission and optimize control sequences using Distech and other BAS platforms; update graphics and logic as required.
- Perform troubleshooting and diagnostics to identify root causes of faults; complete repairs and replacements of controls components and field devices.
- Respond to service calls, perform preventive maintenance, functional testing and recommissioning to ensure reliable system performance.
- Use BAS tools and protocols (e.g., BACnet, Modbus) to verify network connectivity and integrate devices into the building automation network.
- Read and interpret electrical schematics, mechanical drawings and control logic to carry out installations and repairs accurately.
- Document work performed, create service reports, maintain as-built drawings and update control documentation and sequence of operations.
- Collaborate with engineers, project managers and clients to develop solutions, provide technical recommendations and train building operators on system use and maintenance.
- Follow company safety policies and applicable codes, and maintain appropriate tools, vehicle and inventory for field service.
- Participate in continuous improvement initiatives to enhance commissioning processes, service delivery and diagnostic techniques.
Qualifications
- Diploma or certificate in HVAC controls, electrical, instrumentation, mechatronics or equivalent technical training.
- 3 years of hands-on experience with building automation systems, controls troubleshooting, commissioning and field service in commercial buildings.
- Working knowledge of Distech controls platforms and experience programming controllers and writing control sequences.
- Strong diagnostics and troubleshooting skills across controls hardware, sensors, actuators and network communications.
- Experience with BAS protocols (e.g., BACnet, Modbus) and integrating devices on building networks.
- Proven ability to commission systems, run functional tests and document results accurately.
- Familiarity with HVAC systems and the ability to translate mechanical requirements into control logic.
- Valid drivers license and ability to travel between job sites; willingness to respond to occasional after-hours service calls.
- Good communication skills, client-facing experience and the ability to work independently or as part of a team.
- Relevant certifications are an asset (Distech certification, BAS/BACnet training, electrical licence or equivalent).
