Position Overview
We are seeking a hands-on CNC Manufacturing Engineer to support and optimize our precision machining operations. The role focuses on programming and validating CAM toolpaths, translating CAD models into robust manufacturing processes, and improving production efficiency and quality. The ideal candidate combines strong CAM/CAD skills with manufacturing know-how and experience in CNC programming, tooling, fixturing, setup, and process optimization for high-tolerance parts.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and validate CAM programs and toolpaths for CNC milling and turning operations using industry-standard CAM software.
- Translate CAD models and engineering drawings into manufacturable processes, including process planning, fixture design, and workholding strategies.
- Select cutting tools, inserts, and tooling assemblies; determine feeds, speeds and cutting parameters to optimize cycle time and part quality.
- Create and maintain CNC post-processors, perform post-processing and simulate toolpaths to verify collision-free machining.
- Program and support CNC machines (mills, lathes, Swiss machines), including Fanuc, Haas, and Heidenhain controls; support setup and first-article machining.
- Work with quality and metrology teams to ensure parts meet tolerances using GD&T, CMM, calipers and micrometers; support inspection and corrective actions.
- Implement and document standardized machining processes, work instructions, setup sheets, and process flow for production and prototype builds.
- Troubleshoot in-process issues, perform root-cause analysis, and lead corrective and preventive actions to reduce scrap and rework.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives using Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma principles to improve throughput, yield and cost.
- Collaborate with design engineers, production, and purchasing to support material selection (steel, titanium, Inconel), supplier capabilities, and manufacturability.
- Maintain CNC machines through preventive maintenance programs and coordinate with maintenance teams to minimize downtime.
- Support ERP/MRP data entry for routing, tooling and labor standards and coordinate production scheduling priorities.
Qualifications
- Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or equivalent technical experience.
- Proven experience with CAM, CAD and manufacturing in a precision machining environment.
- Strong hands-on experience programming CNC operations and developing toolpaths; experience with post-processing and toolpath simulation.
- Proficiency with CAD software (SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Siemens NX) and CAM systems (Mastercam or equivalent).
- Familiarity with Fanuc, Haas, and Heidenhain controls and the ability to support CNC setup and troubleshooting.
- Experience with CNC milling and turning, including Swiss turning, as well as EDM and grinding processes (nice to have).
- Solid understanding of tooling selection, fixture design, workholding, feeds and speeds, and machining processes.
- Strong competency in GD&T, blueprint reading, metrology (CMM, calipers, micrometers), SPC, and quality assurance methods.
- Knowledge of materials such as steel, titanium and Inconel and the specific machining considerations for these alloys.
- Experience with ISO9001 quality systems, ERP/MRP systems, and manufacturing documentation practices.
- Familiarity with Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma methodologies; experience leading continuous improvement projects is preferred.
- Excellent problem solving, communication, and collaboration skills; ability to work across engineering, production and quality teams.
- Ability to prioritize multiple projects, work in a fast-paced production environment, and provide hands-on support during setups and first articles.
- Experience with toolpath simulation software, post-processing customization, and CNC machine preventive maintenance is a plus.
