CNC Machinist
Position Overview
We are seeking a skilled CNC Machinist to set up, operate, and maintain CNC mills and lathes to produce precision components to print. The ideal candidate will be proficient in machine setup and operation, pneumatic systems, and the use of hand tools, with a focus on quality, efficiency, and safe shop practices. This role supports production goals by troubleshooting equipment, performing inspections, and continuously improving machining processes.
Key Responsibilities
- Set up and operate CNC machines (mills and lathes) to manufacture parts to print and specification.
- Perform machine setup including tooling selection, fixturing and workholding, tool offsets, and program loading.
- Load, run, and monitor CNC programs; make in-process adjustments to feeds, speeds, and toolpaths to ensure part quality and efficiency.
- Read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and GD&T to confirm tolerances and critical dimensions.
- Perform precision measurements using calipers, micrometers, dial indicators, and other metrology equipment; document inspection results.
- Perform routine preventive maintenance and basic troubleshooting of machines and controls to minimize downtime.
- Execute tool changes, boring, reaming, threading, tapping and secondary operations as required.
- Collaborate with programmers and engineers to optimize parts, tooling, and processes; provide feedback for CAM and CNC programs.
- Support continuous improvement, lean manufacturing initiatives, and maintain accurate production records and SPC data.
- Follow safety procedures, maintain a clean work area, and adhere to quality and compliance requirements.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent; technical certificate or apprenticeship in CNC machining or related field preferred.
- 5 years of hands-on CNC machinist experience with machine setup and machine operation in a production environment.
- Required skills: CNC machining, machine setup, machine operating, pneumatic systems familiarity, and proficient use of hand tools.
- Proven ability to read and interpret blueprints and apply GD&T, tolerancing, and precision measurement techniques.
- Working knowledge of tooling & tool changes, fixturing & workholding, feeds & speeds, cutting tool selection, and tool offsets.
- Experience with precision measuring instruments (micrometers, calipers, dial indicators) and inspection methods; CMM operation and surface plate inspection a plus.
- Basic troubleshooting and preventive maintenance skills for CNC machines and controls.
- Strong attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and the ability to work independently or in a team environment.
- Nice-to-have skills: CAMWorks, MasterCAM, SolidWorks CAM, CAM Programming, CNC Programming, G-Code editing, CAD (SolidWorks, AutoCAD), Fanuc/Haas/Heidenhain/Siemens controls, CNC milling and turning, lathe operation, 3-axis/4-axis/5-axis/multiaxis machining, Swiss turning, CNC setup, machining centers, boring, reaming, threading & tapping, surface grinding, EDM, CNC troubleshooting, CNC simulation, tool offsets, SPC, metrology, CMM operation, surface plate inspection, preventive maintenance, lean manufacturing and process improvement, shop math, drilling, metalworking, and drafting skills.
