Attorney - Insurance Coverage
Position Overview
We are seeking a skilled Attorney to join our litigation team focusing on insurance defense and coverage matters. The successful candidate will represent insurers and insureds in complex civil litigation, handle coverage disputes and bad faith claims, and manage matters from intake through trial and post-judgment enforcement. This role requires strong courtroom experience, excellent drafting and analytical abilities, and the ability to work collaboratively with adjusters and clients to achieve favorable resolutions.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide defense counsel for insurers and insureds in state and federal courts, managing a caseload of insurance-related civil litigation.
- Analyze insurance policies and advise clients on coverage issues, exclusions, and potential bad faith exposure.
- Prepare and respond to pleadings, motions, and discovery; draft, review, and file briefs, memoranda, and other court documents.
- Take and defend depositions, prepare witnesses, and handle discovery disputes and motion practice.
- Represent clients in arbitrations, mediations, and settlement negotiations to resolve claims efficiently and cost-effectively.
- Develop trial strategy, prepare exhibits and witnesses, and try cases to verdict when necessary.
- File and litigate declaratory judgment actions and other coverage-related proceedings as appropriate.
- Collaborate closely with claims professionals, experts, and co-counsel; manage client communications and expectations throughout the lifecycle of a matter.
- Maintain accurate case files, billing records, and docket management; supervise and mentor junior associates and paralegals as assigned.
Qualifications
- Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school and admission to the state bar in good standing.
- Minimum of 3 years of litigation experience, preferably with a focus on insurance defense, coverage analysis, and bad faith claims.
- Proven trial experience and courtroom presence, including conducting trials and arguing motions.
- Strong legal research and writing skills with experience drafting pleadings, motions, and dispositive briefs.
- Experience with depositions, witness preparation, arbitrations, and mediation advocacy.
- Demonstrated knowledge of insurance coverage principles, policy interpretation, and declaratory judgment practice.
- Excellent communication, negotiation, and client-counseling skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with claims professionals and experts.
- High level of organization, time management, and ability to handle a busy docket; familiarity with litigation management and billing software.
- Willingness and ability to travel for hearings and trials as required.
