What are the responsibilities and job description for the Literacy Coach, Alpha - $120,000/year USD position at Crossover?
- On-site at an Alpha campus located in Lake Forest CA, Palo Alto CA, Piedmont CA, San Francisco CA, Santa Monica CA, Greenwich CT, Chicago IL, Boston MA, New York City NY, or Chantilly VA (relocation assistance available)
- Annual salary of $120,000, distributed weekly. Comprehensive health, dental, and vision coverage begins on day one
- Daily instruction supported by AI-driven tools and adaptive learning technology
Alpha's reading instruction operates on one clear principle: every minute counts. Your workshops run for 20 minutes and focus exclusively on what individual students require right now, not what a district timeline suggests they should cover. You'll conduct reading assessments, organize targeted groups, and deliver high-impact structured literacy instruction (phonics, fluency, comprehension) to children ages 4-7, driving measurable weekly progress. AI-powered adaptive platforms work alongside you, producing performance data that informs tomorrow's lesson before you finish today's session.
This position evolves. During your first year, you'll be immersed in direct instruction: facilitating workshops, leading motivational experiences that convert hesitant readers into confident ones, and providing detailed feedback to the technology team refining Alpha's AI literacy systems. As these tools expand and your input influences their design, your influence reaches beyond your own classroom. You'll contribute to a reading framework that spans campuses, scaling what you accomplish with 15 students into a model that serves hundreds.
If you've dedicated your career to demonstrating that structured literacy produces results, and you're prepared to combine that knowledge with technology that extends your reach, this is where your influence transcends a single classroom.
What You Will Be Doing
- Creating and facilitating 20-minute reading workshops informed by your own diagnostic evaluation of each student's reading abilities and instructional needs
- Leveraging AI-generated performance data to modify groupings and instructional priorities between sessions, rather than waiting for quarterly assessment cycles
- Conducting motivational experiences that cultivate intrinsic reading engagement, incorporating developmentally appropriate gamification and personalized goal-setting with K-2 learners
- Piloting and assessing AI literacy platforms during live instruction, then delivering structured feedback to the technology team regarding effectiveness and areas for improvement
- Monitoring quantifiable results (fluency growth, decoding advancement, accuracy gains) and applying those insights to refine your instructional methods on a weekly basis
- Implementing a scripted or commercial reading curriculum. You assess needs and create instruction independently.
- Delivering 60-90 minute traditional literacy blocks. Workshops are brief, targeted, and high-intensity.
- Working exclusively with below-grade-level readers. You'll teach all K-2 students across the full reading spectrum.
- Functioning separately from technology. AI adaptive platforms are embedded in your daily practice, not supplemental.
- Deferring instructional adjustments until quarterly data meetings. You respond immediately based on current data.
Advance early elementary students to grade-level reading proficiency through adaptive, AI-supported structured literacy instruction.
Basic Requirements
- Bachelor's degree (any subject)
- Master's degree in reading instruction OR structured literacy certification (Orton-Gillingham, Wilson Reading System, IMSE, CERI, LETRS, Neuhaus, UFLI, or equivalent)
- 2 years of full-time K-2 structured reading instruction in a school or clinical setting within the last 5 years, utilizing systematic phonics or structured literacy
- Capacity to develop your own reading lessons and articulate what you teach and how, independent of a published program
- Commitment to on-site work at an Alpha campus (Lake Forest CA, Palo Alto CA, Piedmont CA, San Francisco CA, Santa Monica CA, Greenwich CT, Chicago IL, Boston MA, New York City NY, or Chantilly VA; relocation assistance provided)
- Commitment to daily use of AI and adaptive learning tools and flexibility as tools develop
- Legal authorization to work in the U.S. without visa sponsorship
- Familiarity with diagnostic reading assessments (e.g., DRA, DIBELS, AIMSweb) for creating differentiated instructional groups
- Documented history of measurable student reading progress you can describe with concrete data (e.g., advanced 12 students from Level C to Level G within one semester)
- Experience partnering with edtech teams, product teams, or instructional designers on tool creation
- Work history in a startup, micro-school, or non-traditional educational setting where you developed systems rather than implementing existing ones
