What are the responsibilities and job description for the Counselor, Alpha - $100,000/year USD position at Crossover?
- $100,000 annual W2 salary paid weekly, with health, dental, and vision benefits starting day one
- On-site position at an Alpha K-8 campus located in Denver, CO; Oklahoma City, OK; Tulsa, OK; Nashville, TN; Austin, TX; Brownsville, TX; Fort Worth, TX; Houston, TX (Central, South, or The Woodlands); Park City, UT (Salt Lake City area); or Toronto, Canada (relocation assistance available)
The most meaningful support you can offer a student who reached 99% of their goal is to refuse to accept anything less than completion. If that expectation feels uncomfortable, this role is not for you. If it energizes you—because maintaining high standards is how you demonstrate belief in a student's potential—continue reading.
At Alpha, academic learning occurs through AI-powered applications. No traditional lectures. No textbooks. Half of your day is spent facilitating one-hour life-skills workshops covering topics like public speaking, focus, and constructive feedback. The remaining half involves working with students individually or in small groups, analyzing their progress via Coachbot analytics, and driving each one toward 100% completion of their weekly app objectives. You will not follow a rigid script—workshops provide a foundation, but top performers in this role customize them and create new content when needed.
Success each quarter means every student in your cohort completes their weekly app goals, passes the Test2Pass for all life-skills workshops, and 90% report a positive relationship with you. Falling short on any of these three measures means the role's core expectations were not met. In your first year, you will master the operational playbook; as you demonstrate your ability to uphold standards, opportunities open to advance to Lead Guide, where you mentor new hires while continuing direct student engagement.
If you prefer traditional classroom teaching, need fully developed curriculum handed to you, or view warmth and rigorous standards as incompatible, this position will not be a fit. If your background includes athletic coaching, camp counseling, tutoring where you refused to let students give up, or performing for young audiences, the final step before an offer is spending a full day on campus coaching actual Alpha students. If that prospect excites you most, submit your application today.
What You Will Be Doing
- Facilitating one-hour life-skills workshops for K-8 cohorts on subjects including public speaking, focus, feedback, and other foundational competencies, customizing the playbook and creating new sessions when you identify unmet needs
- Conducting daily individual and small-group motivation sessions to ensure every student reaches 100% of their weekly app targets, leveraging Coachbot analytics, Alpha's incentive structures (school currency, leaderboards), and your individual rapport with each student to overcome resistance
- Delivering the Test2Pass (Alpha's mastery-based evaluation) for each life skill and coaching students who do not pass until mastery is achieved
- Adjusting your coaching approach across a broad age spectrum, from kindergarteners requiring high energy and physical engagement to 8th graders needing candid conversation and accountability
- Serving as the adult who maintains high expectations and the adult students trust and want to confide in; warmth creates the relational foundation to challenge, and challenge communicates your belief in their capability
- Delivering instruction at a whiteboard; academic content is embedded in the apps, not your direct teaching
- Creating curriculum from the ground up; you activate an existing playbook through energy and narrative
- Passively monitoring students on computers; motivation in this context is active, personalized, and persistent
- Reducing a weekly target to enable a student to meet it; when a student falls behind, the solution is supporting the student, not adjusting the goal
- Marking homework, running standardized test preparation, or handling parent outreach; Campus Leads manage parent communication, and the other tasks do not exist in this model
Ensure every student in your K-8 cohort achieves their weekly learning objectives, demonstrates mastery of each life skill, and concludes the year reporting a positive relationship with you.
