Our major retail client is seeking a Footwear Product Designer to join their team for a 4 month freelance role. This role focuses on designing innovative performance footwear across global football, American football, baseball, training, and golf. The designer will create original concepts and performance solutions while balancing athlete needs, style, manufacturability, and cost. The position requires a high level of creative problem solving, technical footwear expertise, and the ability to lead and mentor other designers while collaborating across a broad, cross-functional team.

The Basics
Duration: Freelance assignment ending 8/31/2026
Hours per week: Full-time, approximately 40 hours per week
Location requirements: Onsite in Beaverton, OR, with a 4/1 hybrid model allowing remote work on Fridays

Top 3 Required Qualifications

  • At least 5 years of professional experience designing and developing innovative footwear, with prior hands-on footwear design experience
  • Strong ability to translate athlete and consumer insights into performance-driven footwear concepts, including accurate 2D technical drawings and tech packs
  • Advanced visual communication skills, including sketching, rendering, and proficiency in design software such as Photoshop and Illustrator

Other Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in design or a comparable combination of education and experience. Experience with lifestyle, cleated, and golf footwear is preferred. Working knowledge of form, color, materials, manufacturing processes, and human factors. Experience with 3D design tools, prototyping or cobbling, Vizcom, and presentation software such as Keynote is a plus. Demonstrated leadership, mentoring capability, and comfort presenting concepts to internal and external audiences, including athletes. Strong collaboration, communication, and adaptability in fast-paced, ambiguous environments.

Key Responsibilities

  • Create original footwear designs and performance solutions across multiple sports categories, from concept through development
  • Research athlete and consumer insights and apply them to design narratives, aesthetics, and functional solutions
  • Collaborate with cross-functional partners including engineering, product management, development, testing, marketing, and merchandising
  • Develop and deliver a broad range of design concepts that balance performance, style, manufacturability, and cost
  • Lead design discussions and present concepts to internal and external audiences
  • Mentor and support other designers while contributing to a collaborative and forward-thinking design culture

 

In this position, you may have access to client or customer systems, confidential and/or proprietary information or data. This position is onsite and requires you to work closely with other individuals in a collaborative team environment.
