OVERVIEW
The Youth Engagement Specialist provides direct, engagement-based support to students participating in the Summer Learning Labs (SLL) program, a five-week initiative focused on academic, social, and emotional growth.
Students receive academic instruction in the mornings and participate in hands-on enrichment experiences in the afternoons, including creative activities, recreation, and field trips.
This role is about more than supervision. It focuses on building relationships, sparking curiosity, and creating meaningful summer experiences that help students thrive.
The Youth Enrichment Specialist plays a critical role in fostering a safe, engaging, and inclusive environment where students feel supported, motivated, and connected.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Direct Student Engagement (Enrichment Programming)
- Support and facilitate afternoon enrichment activities such as arts, games, STEM, recreation, and group projects
- Encourage participation, creativity, teamwork, and positive peer interactions
- Assist with transitions from academic instruction to enrichment activities
- Deliver programming in classroom, outdoor, and community-based settings
Student Supervision & Field Trips
- Accompany and supervise students on off-site field trips
- Ensure student safety, engagement, and appropriate behavior at all times
- Maintain awareness of student needs and respond appropriately in all environments
Environment & Relationship Building
- Build positive, respectful relationships with students that promote belonging and participation
- Maintain a safe, structured, and inclusive environment
- Reinforce positive behavior and support redirection when needed
Program Support & Operations
- Assist with set-up, clean-up, and organization of materials, snacks, and activities
- Follow all program policies, safety procedures, and behavior expectations
- Collaborate with site leaders and instructional staff to support daily operations
Communication & Professional Expectations
- Communicate effectively with staff regarding student needs and daily programming
- Participate in team meetings or check-ins as needed
- Ensure all interactions reflect professionalism, respect, and student-centered support
Qualifications (Required):
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Experience working with children or youth preferred
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Reliable, punctual, and able to commit to the full program schedule
- Comfortable supervising students in classrooms, outdoor spaces, and community settings
- Reliable transportation and ability to travel locally if needed
- Must successfully pass criminal history and child protective services background checks
- Must obtain and maintain CPR and First Aid certification and complete all required Cornerstone Human Services training
Preferred Qualifications:
- College coursework or degree in education, social work, psychology, child development, recreation, or a related field.
- Experience in summer programs, after-school programs, childcare, tutoring, or youth mentoring
- Experience supporting group activities and managing student behavior
- Interest in education, youth development, or behavioral health fields
