Purpose:
Coastal Community Resilience Assessment Coordinators are AmeriCorps Positions that will support coastal communities at risk to coastal flooding and inundation with the documentation of their communities’ assets and vulnerabilities. This AmeriCorps program will help in creating asset maps and vulnerability assessments that is an important first step that will enable coastal communities to identify and prioritize coastal resilience projects and activities. Coastal Community Resilience Assessment Coordinators will be placed with NC State University faculty members and host-community sponsors, where they will document community assets and vulnerabilities as part of a team cohort.
Description of Duties:
Assets Mapping and Vulnerabilities Assessment:
- Research existing local and county hazard mitigation plans to identify critical community assets (e.g., infrastructure) and assess the risk(s) they face.
- Research vulnerability factors and existing spatial data layers that can be imported into Geographic Information Systems platforms, such as ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online.
- Create a geospatial database of assets and vulnerabilities by using public sources or digitizing data gathered through field observations, community engagement, or research.
- Assess community assets’ exposure, sensitivity, adaptive capacity, and overall vulnerability to identified hazards (e.g., flooding).
- Generate effective visualizations (e.g., static maps, dynamic web maps, and interactive story maps) to investigate, summarize, and communicate vulnerability of assets.
Community Engagement:
- Engage with community members in the co-creation of knowledge to: 1) identify hazards of concern, 2) comprehensively map community assets most valuable by residents, and 3) document vulnerabilities that may not be captured in existing plans or secondary data sources.
- Work with community organizations and individuals to share final asset maps and vulnerability assessment.
- Document community capacity assets and needs for future coastal resilience projects and activities.
Dissemination of Results and Documentation:
- Actively participate in update sessions to gather feedback from partners and community members.
- Present findings through oral presentations or posters at appropriate venues such as community gatherings, symposiums, and meetings.
- Summarize all program outcomes in a final report and a companion Story Map.
Communication
- Practice inclusive and thoughtful behavior in building rapport with program participants, site stakeholders and program staff.
- Communicate regularly and effectively with program staff, and site personnel.
- Report data in online systems in a timely and accurate manner.
- Provide constructive evaluation of program elements (trainings, mentors, community liaisons, reports)
Program Participation Requirements
- Demonstrate regular, timely attendance and adherence to hours as scheduled.
- Commit to service for the service term of 10 weeks of service, serving up to 400 hours.
- Participate in all required AmeriCorps sponsored training sessions, meetings, and travel as necessary. Coastal Community Resilience Assessment Coordinators will receive training in asset mapping, vulnerability assessments, and ArcGIS Online, as well as best practices for community engagement, group facilitation, and communicating about climate change with a focus on pursuing climate justice.
- Actively participate in service projects and commemorating days such as Martin Luther King, Jr. Day (as applicable). These may include evening and/or weekend hours.
Qualifications:
- United States citizen, United States national, or a lawful permanent resident alien
- At least 17 years of age
- Has received a high school diploma or equivalency certificate; or has not dropped out of elementary or secondary school to enroll as an AmeriCorps participant, and agrees to obtain a high school diploma or its equivalent prior to using the education award
- Agrees to provide information to establish eligibility and to complete a National Service Criminal History Check.
- Speak, read, and write English fluently.
- Experience with professional computer skills and confidence using computers. Comfort and experience using Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel), completing Internet searches, and navigating resources online, completing data entry, using e-mail regularly including sending attachments, using databases and software, using videoconferencing software, and attending training online.
- Positions that require driving will require a valid driver’s license and the ability to pass a driving record check. Some positions require access to a personal vehicle for transportation.

Time Requirements:
- Typically, this position is expected to serve [blank-day] to [blank-day], but exact service schedules may vary. A half hour lunch break will not be counted towards AmeriCorps service
- Member may be required to participate in national, state, or local service projects or events as part of their service term.
- In-person attendance at meetings.
- Overnight travel. Travel expenses will be covered by the program.
Orientation and Training:
- Member will receive an orientation that includes training on AmeriCorps prohibited and unallowable activities.
Benefits:
- Segal AmeriCorps Education Award of $1565.08
- Living Allowance of $580.00 per week.

Evaluation and Reporting:
As an AmeriCorps member, performance will be evaluated on whether the member has completed the required number of hours, the member has satisfactorily completed assignments, and if the member has met other performance criteria that were clearly communicated at the beginning of the term of service.
Reporting requirements include, but are not limited to, bi-weekly timesheets and accomplishment tracking.
