Fort Frederica National Monument on Saint Simons Island, Georgia, preserves the archaeological remnants of a fort and town built by James Oglethorpe from 1736-1748 to protect the southern boundary of the British Colony from Spanish raids. At its peak in 1742 1000-1500 men, women, and children occupied the 40 acre town site. In 1742, the Spanish attacked the island and were driven back thereby fulfilling the forts and towns purpose. The park has a robust archeological education and living history program.
