What are the responsibilities and job description for the Plaintiff Personal Injury Attorney position at Confidential?
A respected, trial-focused plaintiff personal injury law firm in downtown/midtown Sacramento is hiring a full-time associate attorney. We represent seriously injured people throughout Sacramento, Stockton, and the Central Valley in trucking accident, catastrophic injury, wrongful death, and serious personal injury matters.
We are a small, boutique firm by design. We deliberately maintain a lower caseload than most plaintiff PI firms so that every case gets prepared as if it is going to trial — because at our firm, trial readiness is not a marketing line. Our attorneys train year-round with nationally recognized trial communication experts and at small-group trial intensives. We believe the settlement value of any personal injury case is set by whether the lawyer representing it can actually try it.
We're hiring an associate attorney with 0 to 3 years of post-bar experience. Plaintiff personal injury experience is a plus but not required — we have seen excellent plaintiff lawyers come from defense backgrounds, from public entity work, and straight out of law school. What we cannot train is character. What we can train is the law.
Responsibilities
- Manage your own caseload of serious personal injury matters from intake through resolution, with active mentorship from senior trial attorneys
- Draft complaints, answers, discovery, motions, oppositions, and appellate briefs at a high standard
- Take and defend depositions of plaintiffs, defendants, treating physicians, experts, and lay witnesses
- Argue motions, including discovery motions and motions for summary judgment
- Attend court appearances, status conferences, mandatory settlement conferences, and mediations
- Prepare cases for trial, including witness preparation, exhibit organization, and trial brief drafting
- Build genuine relationships with clients, return calls within one business day, and treat every client like family
- Participate in year-round trial training with the firm's outside trial communication experts and instructors
- Contribute to case strategy meetings and bring your own ideas to the table
Qualifications
- Active membership in the State Bar of California in good standing, or admission expected within 60 days
- 0 to 3 years of post-bar legal experience
- Strong legal writing skills — this is the single most important technical skill for this role
- Demonstrated attention to detail and follow-through
- Experience or genuine interest in litigation, trial work, and personal injury law
- Excellent verbal communication skills and the ability to connect with clients from diverse backgrounds
- A character reference who would describe you as honest, hardworking, and someone they would want in their corner during a hard time
What we offer
- Base salary: $100,000 – $130,000 per year, depending on experience, with the higher end of the range reserved for candidates with meaningful litigation or trial experience
- Performance bonus structure tied to case outcomes after trial period, with real financial upside as you take on more responsibility
- Year-round trial training, including small-group trial intensives with nationally recognized trial communication experts — this training is paid for by the firm
- Health insurance
- Paid time off
- State Bar dues, mandatory CLE, and professional association memberships paid by the firm
- Malpractice insurance coverage
- Downtown/Midtown Sacramento office with parking paid by employer
- A genuine mentorship relationship with senior attorneys — you will not be handed a stack of files and left to figure it out alone
- A career path with real growth potential
What makes our firm different
Most plaintiff personal injury firms in this market are volume firms. They run high caseloads, settle most cases for less than they are worth, and treat associates as case-processing labor. We are the opposite.
We take fewer cases. We prepare each one as if a jury will see it. We treat clients like family, not files. And we expect our associates to grow into trial lawyers who can stand on their own. If that sounds like the kind of firm you have been looking for, we would love to hear from you.
Our values are non-negotiable
We treat our clients, our staff, and each other with respect at all times. We own our mistakes before someone else has to point them out. We do not tolerate dishonesty, disrespect toward staff, or hidden errors. If those expectations sound right to you, you will fit here. If they make you uncomfortable, you probably will not.
How to apply
Please apply through really with the following materials:
- Current resume
- One-page cover letter describing who you are, why this kind of work matters to you, and what you are looking for in your next position
- A legal writing sample of 5 to 10 pages (redacted is fine; we care about the writing, not the underlying case details)
Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis. We respond to every applicant who submits a complete application, whether or not we move forward to an interview.
