Job Description: Director of Construction (Licensed Contractor)
The Director of Construction is a senior leadership position responsible for overseeing all construction operations, ensuring projects are completed on time, within budget, and to the highest quality standards. This role requires an experienced construction professional who holds a valid contractor’s license and has a deep understanding of residential and/or commercial building practices, project management, safety regulations, and team leadership.
The Director of Construction will manage project teams, supervise subcontractors, improve operational processes, and collaborate closely with executive leadership to support company growth.
Key ResponsibilitiesOperational Leadership
- Oversee all construction projects from pre-construction planning through final completion.
- Develop and manage construction policies, workflows, and operational standards.
- Lead and mentor project managers, site supervisors, foremen, and field teams.
- Ensure all construction activities comply with building codes, safety standards, and regulatory requirements.
- Provide strategic guidance on project sequencing, budget control, staffing, and subcontractor selection.
Project Management & Execution
- Review project plans, drawings, scopes, estimates, and schedules to ensure accuracy and feasibility.
- Conduct regular jobsite visits to monitor progress, quality, and safety compliance.
- Resolve project challenges quickly, including schedule conflicts, material delays, or subcontractor issues.
- Oversee procurement of materials, equipment, and trade partners.
- Ensure proper documentation, reporting, and communication across all active projects.
Contractor License Oversight
- Maintain an active and valid contractor’s license required for company operations.
- Ensure the company remains compliant with all state and local licensing regulations.
- Review and approve plans, permits, code compliance, and technical decisions requiring licensed oversight.
- Provide expert guidance on construction methods, code interpretation, and technical requirements.
Financial & Budget Management
- Oversee construction project budgets, cost tracking, and financial forecasting.
- Work with estimating teams to review bids, scopes, and labor/material costs.
- Implement cost-saving strategies without compromising quality or safety.
- Approve change orders and ensure accurate project billing and documentation.
Safety & Quality Assurance
- Enforce strict adherence to OSHA standards and company safety programs.
- Lead quality control initiatives to ensure workmanship meets or exceeds company and industry standards.
- Conduct site audits, safety meetings, and post-project evaluations.
Cross-Department Collaboration
- Work closely with executive leadership, sales, operations, and finance teams to ensure alignment on project goals and profitability.
- Partner with HR on training, hiring, and performance management for construction staff.
- Serve as a key representative for client communication regarding project execution and expectations.
QualificationsRequired
- Valid state contractor's license (General Contractor or equivalent).
- 7 years of progressive construction management experience.
- Proven leadership experience managing multiple projects and large teams.
- Extensive knowledge of residential and/or commercial construction practices.
- Strong understanding of building codes, permitting processes, and construction law.
- Proficiency in construction software (Procore, Buildertrend, PlanGrid, or equivalent).
- Excellent communication, planning, and organizational skills.
Preferred
- Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Architecture, or related field.
- Experience in restoration, roofing, or insurance-driven projects.
- OSHA 30 certification or equivalent.
- Experience with multi-site or multi-state operations.
