POSITION SUMMARY

The Special Projects Crew Leader is a supervisory position responsible for the coordination and execution of specialized projects and event logistics across the County’s Parks. This position reports directly to a Park Maintenance Supervisor; the employee must be self-motivated and technically adaptive at maintaining specialized county parks and each park's assets. Key responsibilities include leading the maintenance and repairs of playgrounds, splash pads, fencing, irrigation systems, minor electrical troubleshooting, as well as event logistics and seasonal tasks of installation, troubleshooting and coordination of various tasks as assigned by the Parks Maintenance Manager.

This position assists the Park Maintenance Manager and Supervisors in the upkeep of the grounds and accompanying facilities within all parks to ensure they meet departmental standards and safety requirements.

The employee's duties include managing the day-to-day operations of the special project crew; developing and analyzing the life span of park amenities; developing and implementing long- and short-term goals and objectives of the special projects crew; developing the schedule of logistics behind all events held within county parks; must be willing to work routine evenings, weekends and holidays as needed.

The individual should be able to promote teamwork, create learning opportunities within the division and work with diverse personalities, manage priorities and deftly handle complex issues, while supervising full-time and seasonal employees.

While some work is performed in an office, most tasks of this position are performed outdoors, occasionally in heat, cold or inclement weather. The employee performs duties sitting, standing, walking, and bending, crouching and stooping. The employee must lift both light and heavy objects frequently. They will also be exposed to dirt, grass, dust, grease and machinery moving parts. Protective devices such as gloves, back braces and masks are available if needed.

NATURE AND SCOPE

The Special Projects Crew Leader must use their judgement in determining the best approach to be used in assigning tasks to inspect, repair and plan event logistics and oversee the repair and maintenance the county’s park and recreation facilities and equipment. The Parks and Recreation Maintenance Manager will make specific assignments concerning detailed objectives and tasks to be accomplished.

The work in this position consists of organizing, scheduling, supervising and performing tasks which assure that the parks and recreation facilities are properly maintained. The work is made complex by a fluctuation of manpower, variations in skill levels of workers and the wide variety of tasks to be performed.

PRINCIPLES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • The position is responsible for managing a special projects crew and various tasks assigned to meet the department’s high standards, safety goals and project timelines.
  • Perform safety inspections of facilities, park decorations, splash pads, playgrounds and other park assets and carry out corrective actions for work needing to be performed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Considerable knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and equipment utilized in grounds maintenance.
  • Considerable knowledge of safety standards and regulations related to grounds keeping work.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of supervision.
  • Knowledge of irrigation and drainage system design and operation, landscape maintenance and pesticide application.
  • Knowledge of computer applications and software.
  • Leading and or supervising the work of other performing grounds maintenance work.
  • Ability to guide and direct the work of less experienced employees.
  • Ability to use a variety of hand tools and motorized grounds keeping equipment.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Physical strength and ability sufficient to meet job requirements for extended period under uncomfortable conditions in all types of weather.

DESIRABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

2-3 years supervisory experience

Possess a State of Georgia Category 24 pesticide license or the ability to obtain within six months of hire

A combination of education and/or work experience may be substituted for minimum requirements.
