POSITION SUMMARY

The purpose of the position is to transport material, install drainage pipe, and clear grass to provide a safe and serviceable road and drainage system for the county. Successful performance results in safe and well-maintained roads, proper drainage, and needed supplies being properly delivered. Failure to perform may result in unsafe roads, flooding, mis-delivered supplies, and cost overruns.

Guides used are those set forth in the Georgia traffic code and in the instructions provided to the employee by the supervisor. These guides are clear and specific and require little or no interpretation.

The work consists of tasks that are clear-cut and directly related but is complicated by weather, traffic, having to locate underground cables, and having to deal with the public.

Contacts are typically with co-workers, workers in other support units, utility company personnel, and the general public.

Work is performed outdoors where the employee may be exposed to occasional cold or inclement weather, as well as noise, dust, dirt, grease, and machinery and its moving parts. This work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.

Physical demands include intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, bending or crouching, as well as the occasional lifting of objects weighing less than 24 pounds, and the frequent lifting of objects weighing 25 or more pounds. Physical demands also include the use of tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES

• Operates dump truck used in transporting rock, sand, gravel, etc.
• Operates tractor used in cutting grass and underbrush.
• Operates other equipment used in road maintenance such as front end loader, back hoe, pan, and bulldozer.
• Installs and maintains cross drains, driveway pipe, and tail ditches.
• Communicates with utility company personnel concerning locations of underground utilities.
• Repairs road and bridge ties.
• Repairs water cuts.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

• Knowledge of county policies and procedures pertaining to road maintenance and improvement.
• Knowledge of construction principles.
• Knowledge of how to repair heavy equipment tires.
• Skill in operating equipment such as dump truck, loader, and back hoe.
• Skill in operating power tools.
• Skill in locating underground cable.
• Skill in dealing with the public.

DESIRABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

Ability to read, write and perform basic mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent. Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having a similar position for one to two years.

A valid driver’s license is required. Possession of a valid commercial driver's license issued by the State of Georgia for the class of vehicle or equipment operated required.

A combination of education and/or work experience may be substituted for minimum requirements.
