What are the responsibilities and job description for the Motor Equipment Operator III position at City of Virginia Beach?
The City of Virginia Beach - Department of Public Works is looking to hire a Motor Equipment Operator III to join our Street Maintenance Asphalt team.
Motor Equipment Operator III Duties:
Operate heavy-duty, multi-purpose equipment—including single and tandem dump trucks, motor graders, backhoes, excavators, asphalt rollers, snowplows, snow spreaders, front-end loaders, and other equipment —across various terrains and in all weather conditions.
Perform maintenance and repair work on asphalt roads.
Perform and conduct routine inspections and basic preventative maintenance on assigned equipment to ensure safe and efficient operation, reporting any mechanical issues for repair.
Understand oral and written instructions accurately to ensure safe and efficient operations.
Serve as acting crew leader in the supervisor’s absence, providing guidance and oversight to team members.
Strong knowledge of work zone safety practices and traffic control procedures.
Utilize a work management database system to track tasks and document work performed.
Comply with safety and drug testing requirements. This is a safety-sensitive position subject to mandatory drug and alcohol testing in accordance with federal and organizational policies.
Possess and maintain a valid Commercial Driver’s License – Class A issued by Virginia or the State of North Carolina.
*This is an Alpha I and is required to work in excess of their normally scheduled days/hours during all inclement weather (flooding, hurricanes, and snow), and/or in response to short–term department needs and/or City–wide emergencies. *

CDL Hiring Bonus - Newly hired employees with a valid Class A CDL will be eligible for a $4,000 hiring bonus paid in three increments during the first year of employment:
$1,000 with first paycheck
$1,000 first pay period following six-month interim eval (with “meets expectation” performance rating)
$2,000 at conclusion of probationary period (with “meets expectation” performance rating)
