MOTOR EQUIPMENT OPERATOR II/ Dredge Oiler
The City of Virginia Beach Public Works department is currently hiring a Motor Equipment Operator II/Dredge Oiler to perform a variety of labor and maintenance tasks on the City dredge, piping, and related equipment, including:
- Safely operate the skiff (small boat) to support the dredge and floating equipment during dredging tasks such as connecting/ disconnecting pipelines, towing/ maneuvering the dredge and floating equipment, and transiting crew members to and from land/ floating equipment.
- Safely operate the skiff and support equipment needed to perform other associated tasks during maintenance and repair of navigational aids.
- Oil and maintain dredge machinery and mechanical parts.
- Monitor gauges for proper oil and fuel pressures/temperatures and notify the dredge operator as required.
- Perform routine engine checks every 30 minutes and maintain a written log of all readings.
- Assist with making connections/ disconnecting the dredge discharge pipeline.
- Assist with Navigational Aid inventory and maintenance.
- Assist in cleaning of debris and other pipeline blockage problems.
- Assist in placing, removing, and burying the pipeline.
- Assist the dredge mechanic with labor tasks such as preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, and mechanical repairs.
- Clean and paint all dredge machinery and support equipment.
- Individual assignments will be determined by the supervisor based on the current workloads and department needs.
- Follow instructions precisely and work diligently to achieve the objective.
- Communicate respectfully with citizens, coworkers, and managers.
- Perform other job duties requiring skills, knowledge, and physical requirements as demanded by those duties described or less.
**This position is ALPHA 1 and is required to work in excess of their normally scheduled days/hours during all inclement weather (flooding, hurricanes & snow), and/or in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies **
**** CDL preferred; however, not required, candidates who possess a valid CDL will qualify for a $2,000 incentive (stipend or bonus)***
Employee will receive an additional 5% shift differential.
