The City of Virginia Beach Public Works-Infrastructure Support Division is currently hiring a Motor Equipment Operator I/Deckhand for Dredge Operations.

This position will be filled as a Motor Equipment Operator I ($ 38,584.00–$59,820.80), depending on the selected applicant's qualifications and experience.
Duties:
Motor Equipment Operator I/Deckhand
- Connect and disconnect dredge pipelines as needed.
- Assist with winch cable installation and moving dredge equipment.
- Assist with cleaning debris and resolving pipeline blockages.
- Assist with placing, removing, and burying the pipeline.
- Assist with Navigational Aid inventory and maintenance.
- Perform deckhand duties on all vessels, including handling lines and cables, preparing and securing lines for towing and docking, and assisting with setting or retrieving anchors.
- Perform various labor and maintenance tasks associated with the City Dredge, discharge piping, and related equipment, including lifting and moving heavy equipment.
- Perform other job duties requiring skills, knowledge, and physical requirements of the position.
- Perform individual assignments as determined by the supervisor based on workload and departmental needs.
- Clean, prep, and paint dredge machinery and support equipment; perform related tasks as needed.
- Follow instructions precisely and work diligently to achieve assigned objectives.
- Communicate respectfully with citizens, coworkers, and managers.
Mandatory pre-employment physical.
Work Schedule:
Labor Day – Memorial Day 6:30 am-5 pm, M-T
Memorial Day – Labor Day 12 am-10:30 am
*Employee will receive an additional 5% shift differential for Memorial Day-Labor Day.*
Must possess a valid Driver's License (VA or NC)
**This position is ALPHA 1 and is required to work in excess of their normally scheduled days/hours during all inclement weather (flooding, hurricanes & snow), and/or in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies **
**** CDL preferred; however, not required, candidates who possess a valid CDL will qualify for a $2,000 incentive (stipend or bonus) ***
Salary : $38,584 - $59,821
