Maintenance Worker–Water Utilities 2026

Under general supervision, performs maintenance, repair, construction, and operational duties related to the City’s water distribution, wastewater collection, storm drainage, and utility infrastructure systems. Assists in maintaining safe and efficient utility operations through installation, inspection, repair, replacement, and rehabilitation of utility systems and related equipment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Valid Texas Driver License with acceptable driving record
  • Ability to perform the essential functions of the position
  • Must be able to successfully pass background investigation and drug screening in accordance with City policy
  • Must obtain Class D Texas Water Operator License within one (1) year of employment

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • One (1) year experience in utility construction, maintenance, water/wastewater operations, or related field preferred
  • Valid Texas Class A or B Commercial Driver License (CDL) preferred
  • Class B or C Water and/or Wastewater Operator License preferred
  • Experience operating heavy equipment preferred
  • Prior municipal utility maintenance or construction experience preferred
  • Experience with water distribution systems, utility locates, wastewater collection, storm drainage, or other utility infrastructure systems preferred

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Installs, repairs, and maintains water mains, service lines, taps, hydrants, valves, and related utility infrastructure
  • Installs, repairs, and maintains sewer mains, service taps, manholes, storm drains, and related utility systems
  • Assists with repair of water leaks, sewer line breaks, and utility service interruptions
  • Operates rooter equipment and other tools used in clearing sewer blockages and backups
  • Assists with operation and maintenance of pumps, motors, valves, meters, and related utility equipment
  • Reads water meters and performs service disconnects and reconnects as assigned
  • Operates and maintains equipment used in utility construction and maintenance, including backhoes, loaders, dump trucks, trenching equipment, pumps, compactors, generators, and various hand and power tools
  • Assists with excavation, trenching, pipe installation, backfilling, and restoration activities
  • Stocks vehicles with necessary tools, materials, equipment, and safety supplies
  • Cleans, organizes, and maintains facilities, tools, vehicles, and equipment
  • Assists with traffic control setup and work zone safety in accordance with applicable safety standards
  • Maintains professional and courteous interactions with the public, contractors, vendors, and City staff
  • Follows safe work practices and complies with departmental and City safety procedures
  • Works cooperatively with other departments and staff to support City operations and emergency response activities
  • Performs other related duties as assigned

JOB DIMENSIONS

  • Maintains inventory levels on maintenance vehicles
  • Maintains working relationships with City staff, contractors, vendors, and the public
  • Utilizes sound judgment and follows City policies and departmental procedures in daily operations
  • Utilizes department equipment, tools, vehicles, and technology in the performance of duties
  • Communicates effectively verbally and in writing
  • May be required to work evenings, weekends, holidays, emergency call-outs, on-call rotations, and other hours as needed

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Physical requirements include lifting up to 50 pounds occasionally and performing physically demanding outdoor labor
  • Subjected to standing, walking, climbing, bending, kneeling, squatting, crawling, lifting, and working in cramped or strained positions for extended periods of time
  • Working conditions are primarily outdoors with frequent exposure to inclement weather, water/wastewater environments, mechanical hazards, electrical hazards, chemicals, excessive noise, fumes, insects, snakes, and other environmental conditions
  • Duties may involve exposure to confined spaces and other hazardous work environments in accordance with applicable safety procedures and training requirements
  • Required to comply with personal protective equipment requirements
  • Operates City vehicles and equipment on a regular basis
  • Ability to perform effectively in physically demanding and outdoor work environments

SALARY & BENEFITS:

  • Starting pay begins at approximately $18.00/hour DOE
  • Additional pay may be available for qualified certifications and licenses such as CDL, water operator licenses, wastewater operator licenses, heavy equipment operation, and other specialized skills related to departmental operations
  • Excellent benefits package including medical, dental, basic life insurance, TMRS retirement, paid holidays, vacation leave, and sick leave. Supplemental voluntary coverages are also available.
