What are the responsibilities and job description for the Maintenance Worker - Parks and Recreation 2026 position at CITY OF PLEASANTON?
Under general supervision, performs maintenance, repair, landscaping, and groundskeeping duties for City parks, recreational facilities, athletic fields, public grounds, and related facilities to ensure safe, clean, and attractive public spaces for the community.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Valid Texas Driver License with acceptable driving record
- Ability to safely operate and maintain light equipment and power tools used in parks and grounds maintenance
- Ability to perform the essential functions of the position
- Must be able to successfully pass background investigation and drug screening in accordance with City policy
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience in parks maintenance, landscaping, irrigation, carpentry, construction, or related field preferred
- Experience operating heavy equipment preferred
- Non-commercial pesticide applicator license preferred
- Experience in plumbing, irrigation, facility maintenance, or related trades preferred
- Prior municipal parks or grounds maintenance experience preferred
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Maintains City parks, recreational facilities, athletic fields, green spaces, rights-of-way, and public grounds
- Performs mowing, edging, trimming, weed control, and general landscaping duties
- Plants and maintains flowers, shrubs, trees, grass areas, and landscaped beds
- Operates and maintains equipment used in parks and grounds maintenance, including mowers, string trimmers, backpack blowers, tractors, sprayers, chain saws, dump trucks, loaders, and various hand and power tools
- Performs irrigation system maintenance and repairs
- Performs playground inspections and maintenance to help ensure safe public use
- Assists with construction, repair, and maintenance of park amenities, including benches, picnic tables, fencing, and recreational equipment
- Assists with carpentry, concrete work, and minor facility repairs as assigned
- Assists with seasonal preparation and maintenance of athletic fields, including baseball, softball, and soccer fields
- Assists with festival, event, and holiday setup and takedown activities
- Maintains swimming pool grounds and assists with related facility maintenance
- Removes litter, debris, graffiti, and other hazards from parks and facilities
- Applies fertilizers, herbicides, and pesticides in accordance with applicable laws, safety requirements, and licensing requirements
- Operates equipment and performs duties in compliance with City safety policies and personal protective equipment requirements
- Maintains professional and courteous interactions with the public and City staff
- Follows safe work practices and complies with departmental and City safety procedures
- Cleans, sanitizes, and maintains park facilities, restrooms, pavilions, recreational areas, and other public-use spaces
- Works cooperatively with other departments and staff to support City operations and special events
- Performs other related duties as assigned by the Parks Superintendent or department management staff
JOB DIMENSIONS
- Maintains inventory levels on maintenance vehicles
- Maintains working relationships with City staff, contractors, vendors, and the public
- Utilizes sound judgment and follows City policies and departmental procedures in daily operations
- Utilizes department equipment, tools, vehicles, and technology in the performance of duties
- Communicates effectively verbally and in writing
- May be required to work evenings, weekends, holidays, special events, emergency call-outs, and other hours as needed
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS
- Physical requirements include lifting up to 50 pounds occasionally and performing physically demanding outdoor labor
- Subjected to standing, walking, climbing, bending, kneeling, squatting, crawling, lifting, and working in strained positions for extended periods of time
- Working conditions are primarily outdoors with frequent exposure to inclement weather, mechanical hazards, chemicals, excessive noise, insects, snakes, and other environmental conditions. Duties may involve exposure to confined spaces and other hazardous work environments in accordance with applicable safety procedures and training requirements.
- Required to comply with personal protective equipment requirements
- Operates City vehicles and equipment on a regular basis
- Ability to perform effectively in physically demanding and outdoor work environments
SALARY & BENEFITS:
- Starting pay begins at approximately $18.00/hour DOE
- Additional pay may be available for qualified certifications and licenses such as irrigation, pesticide applicator, CDL, heavy equipment, pool operation, and other specialized skills related to departmental operations
