Plano Parks and Recreation is looking for Water Safety Instructors. Below is a listing of the primary job responsibilities:

  • Ensures the safety of class participants.
  • Plans and instructs swimming lessons; records class attendance.
  • Maintains class attendance and course records.
  • Responds to questions regarding swim lessons.

What we are looking for

TMC is looking for individuals who enjoy being in the water and want to have fun while sharing information on how to help students learn how to swim or improve on their swimming skills. We are looking for individuals who are comfortable with talking to students that range in age from infants to adults. This person must also be able to swim all 4 strokes and be capable of talking and interacting with participants, parents, and staff.

Full Job Description

Summary of Duties: Under basic supervision, the Water Safety Instructor I is responsible for planning and instructing swimming lessons in accordance with City and department policies.

Distinguishing Characteristics: This is the entry-level classification in the Water Safety Instructor series. The incumbent follows routine procedures and guidelines in the application of prescribed duties and works under close supervision with work frequently reviewed by a superior. This classification is distinguished from the Water Safety Instructor II in that the latter performs more complex technical duties requiring a higher level of knowledge and skill.

  • Ensures the safety of class participants.
  • Plans and instructs swimming lessons; records class attendance.
  • Maintains class attendance and course records.
  • Promotes public relations with facility users and outside organizations by presenting water safety seminars to requesting groups.
  • Responds to questions regarding swim lessons.
  • Completes general housekeeping duties in the aquatic facility.
  • Regular and consistent attendance for the assigned work schedule is essential.

Marginal Duties

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Typical Decisions: The incumbent must effectively interpret and implement the Red Cross curriculum and guidelines to match those of the department, and be able to exercise good judgment to ensure a safe environment for participants.

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge of: American Red Cross Water Safety curriculum and CPR.

Skill in: Communicating clearly both verbally and in writing; demonstrating all swimming strokes; interacting tactfully and effectively with the public.

Education: Must be at least 16 years of age.

Experience: No previous experience required.

Any work related experience resulting in acceptable proficiency levels in the above Minimum Qualifications is an acceptable substitute for the above specified education and experience requirements

Licenses and Certifications: American Red Cross issued Water Safety Instructor certification. American Red Cross CPR and First Aid certification.

Conditions of Employment: Must pass a drug test, driver license check, criminal history background check, periodic CJIS background check (for positions requiring access into Police buildings) and social security number verification check.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions: Must possess mobility to work in and around City pools and facilities; strength, stamina, and mobility to perform light to medium physical work; to demonstrate swimming and safety techniques; and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone or radio. The job involves frequent walking to identify problems or hazards. Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or calculator. Positions in this classification bend, stoop, kneel, twist and reach when teaching and maintaining pool area. Employees must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects weighing up to 50 pounds, or heavier weights with the use of proper equipment.

Employees work in and around City pools and facilities and are exposed to loud noise levels, hot temperatures, chemical hazards, and hazardous physical substances and fumes.
