The Retirement Office is currently seeking a dedicated professional to join their team as a Retirement Assistant. The department is comprised of 23 positions that are responsible for providing pension information to members of the City of Phoenix Employees' Retirement System (COPERS) and the Arizona Public Safety Personnel Retirement System (PSPRS). The City's Deferred Compensation Plans (401(a)/457(b)/PEHP) are also managed within the office. Each of the benefit functions in Retirement report to their respective Board of Trustees that are responsible for overseeing roughly $8 billion in retirement assets. The Retirement Office is comprised of three sections: Administration/Operations, Benefits, and Investments.

The Retirement Assistant Responsibilities Include
- Advising employees, retirees, and dependents regarding City provided benefit programs.
- Reconciling salary and service credit issues.
- Providing paraprofessional retirement counseling.
- Presenting retirement education and information at City sponsored classes and seminars.
- Calculating General City and Public Safety employees' pensions, retirement buy backs, refunds, governmental and military service purchases.
- Processing Arizona State Retirement System transfers.
- Working with city departments and external agencies.
- Assisting retirees with general questions and helping them complete tax, direct deposit and address changes.
IDEAL CANDIDATE
- Ability to apply mathematical reasoning, deductive reasoning, and information ordering to solve complex mathematical problems.
- Ability to work directly and collaboratively with peers to identify solutions to complex challenges
- Ability to work independently and in tandem with peers, across organizational lines and in harmony with other team members and department leadership.
- Ability to communicate effectively with different groups/individuals.
- Ability to work in a fast paced, high volume, team environment, requiring organizational skills.
- Ability to conduct large group presentations as it relates to retirement.
- Flexibility with fluctuating deadlines.
- Knowledge of auditing and general accounting practices, attention to detail and documentation skills.
Pay and Hiring Range: $26.18 to $36.84 per hour.
Pay Range Explanation
- Pay range is the entire compensation range for the position classification.
- Hiring range is an estimate of where you can receive an offer. The actual salary offer will carefully consider a wide range of factors, including your skills, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, training, and internal equity.

Minimum Qualifications
- Four years of progressively responsible clerical experience of which one year must be at the paraprofessional level in the area of benefits, retirement and/or pensions
- OR Bachelor's degree in public or business administration or a related field
- Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted

The minimum qualifications listed above, plus:
- One or more years of experience with pension/retirement/benefits or similar field.
- Customer service experience with the public and inter-governing agencies.
- Experience reconciling information from various source documents and records utilizing general analytical and arithmetic reasoning.
- Experience explaining technical matters/policy.
- Experience processing payroll transactions.
- Proficiency using word processing, spreadsheet, databases, and presentation software.
