About This Position
The Parks and Recreation Department provides residents and visitors with more than 41,000 acres of desert parks and mountain preserves. The parks feature 41 trailheads and more than 200 miles of trails, and 185 city parks. Additionally, there are 32 community and recreation centers, classes, and sports programs for all ages, 29 pools, eight golf courses, and a variety of specialty and cultural venues and facilities.
The fundamental reason this classification exists is to perform maintenance of parks, or other landscaped areas. Some positions exercise lead responsibilities over unskilled employees. The groundskeeper assignment is responsible for maintaining the attractiveness and cleanliness of the parks and preserve areas. Typical duties include removing trash, trimming trees and removing the branches, raking leaves, pulling weeds, sweeping, mopping, cleaning and stocking restrooms, offices, and shared areas. Other duties include painting, operating and maintaining small power tools such as lawn mowers, trimmers, edgers, and hedgers, digging holes, planting trees and vegetation. Weekend and holiday coverage is required. Candidates that are hired for this position will be hired for the Rio Salado Habitat Restoration Area and South Mountain Park.
IDEAL CANDIDATE
Pay Range: $18.16 - $26.83 per hour.
Hiring Range: $18.16 - $21.02 per hour.
Effective July 6, 2026, the following pay rates will go into effect.
Pay Range: $18.52 - $27.37 per hour.
Hiring Range: $18.52 - $21.44 per hour.

IDEAL CANDIDATE
- Ability to communicate orally with co-workers and the public in a one-to-one setting.
- Ability to follow directions to keep areas clean and inviting.
- Ability to work independently.
- Ability to learn cleaning, maintenance, and gardening methods, materials and equipment such as push and riding mowers, string trimmers, edger and hedge shears. Ability to work in different weather conditions with exposure to the elements.
Pay Range: $18.16 - $26.83 per hour.
Hiring Range: $18.16 - $21.02 per hour.
Effective July 6, 2026, the following pay rates will go into effect.
Pay Range: $18.52 - $27.37 per hour.

Minimum Qualifications
- Must be willing and able to learn the functions of a Groundskeeper such as:
- Following verbal and written direction.
- Moving objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Working irregular hours, shifts, weekends, holidays, and evenings.
- Walking for prolonged periods including walking over rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces.
- Working outside in a variety of environmental extremes such as heat, cold, rain, air pollution, and dust.
- Being dependable and able to actively learn and perform manual labor and physical tasks for a full shift of eight hours or more.
- Other Combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted
- All finalists for positions are subject to a criminal background check applicable to the department or position.
- Some positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.

The minimum qualifications listed above, plus:
- Groundskeeper, custodial, or landscaping experience
- Experience doing janitorial work, including restroom cleaning.
- Experience using and maintaining hand and power tools.
- Trail and/or general park maintenance experience.
- Irrigation experience.
