Description
Directs and coordinates the staff, activities and operations of the Longview Fire Department (LFD) fire prevention and investigation work group; investigates arson and hazardous material incidents, and inspects City buildings to enforce fire and safety code compliance.
Examples of Duties
Directs and coordinates LFD fire prevention and investigation work group; assigns work activities, monitors work flow, and evaluates work effectiveness, methods and procedures. Reviews and evaluates operations to identify and resolve service delivery issues; meets regularly with staff to discuss and resolve workload and technical issues; coordinates inspection, investigation, enforcement and prevention activities. Supervises, disciplines and evaluates staff; prioritizes and assigns tasks and projects; counsels, trains, coaches and instructs employees as required; reviews the work of assigned staff to ensure the work quality and timely accomplishment of assigned duties and responsibilities. Evaluates construction and site development plans for compliance to fire and safety codes; supervises and conducts inspections for building occupancy, alarm and fire extinguisher systems. Interprets and explains codes, regulations, permit and code enforcement rules, and related policies and procedures to developers, contractors, property owners and the general public. Supervises and conducts investigations of arson, explosions, bomb threats, hazardous materials and suspicious fire incidents; reviews evidence and verifies information related to the investigation and resolution of criminal incidents; works with law enforcement personnel and other agencies to investigate crime scenes and coordinate enforcement activities. Plans and coordinates fire prevention and safety classes for schools and community groups. Reviews and approves reports on investigation findings; updates and maintains a variety of operational and administrative reports and records; monitors budget and approves expenditures. Continuously updates knowledge of traffic patterns, streets, landmarks and building locations, and special hazards of designated facilities. Coordinates media relations and community services programs to promote safety, risk reduction, fire prevention and disaster preparedness; coordinates special events as assigned. Performs other related duties as assigned or required.
Minimum Requirements
Associate's Degree in Fire Science or Criminal Justice, and five years fire service experience including 3 years supervisory experience; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience. Must possess a valid Texas Driver's License. Certifications for Firefighter, Inspector and Arson Investigator from Texas Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP) are required. Certification for Paramedic from Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) is required. Peace Officers License from Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officers Standards and Education (TCLEOSE) is required.
Physical Demands/Work Environment
Work is performed in a standard office environment and at emergency incident sites. Must maintain a level of physical fitness to meet Department standards.
