The City of Lake Oswego is seeking qualified candidates for the Fleet Technician position within the Motor Pool Division of the Public Works Department.  Motor Pool is responsible for the maintenance and repair of City-owned fleet, which includes a wide variety of vehicles, along with small and large equipment.

Under the direction of the Assistant Public Works Director, this full-time position will be assigned to perform skilled mechanical work that ranges from routine tune ups to complex repairs on all types of City fleet. The selected individual will be expected to utilize computerized diagnostic tools and online programs to assist with maintenance tasks, as well as an electronic fleet work order systems to organize and maintain records. In addition, the Fleet Technician will be expected to provide internal customer service to all fleet users within the City organization.
  1. Perform preventative maintenance, inspection and service on all City Fleet, except fire engines. This includes but is not limited to: engine and transmission oil and filter changes, repairing electrical circuits, replacing spark plugs, repairing flat tires, and changing fuel and air filters.
  2. Respond to requests for repair/maintenance on City fleet, provide excellent internal customer service to drivers.
  3. Along with cars, trucks and police vehicles, Fleet Technicians will be expected to complete work on these other types of fleet:
    1. Tractors and mowing equipment including specialty mowers and attachments.
    2. Small engines such as pumps, generators, mowers, pressure washers, chainsaws, weed eaters, blowers, plate whackers and saws.
    3. Utility and equipment trailers (lights, brakes, tires, beds and tie downs, tow hitches, safety chains and jacks).
    4. Construction equipment/fleet: backhoe, track hoe, skid steer, dump truck, bucket truck.
    5. Specialty equipment, including street sweepers, high pressure cleaners and Hydro excavator.
  4. Maintain and repair a variety of systems and components on all fleet, including, but not limited to:
    1. Specialty hydraulic systems, water systems, and electrical systems on street sweepers, high pressure cleaners and Hydro excavator.
    2. Electrical systems, up-fitting new vehicle lighting systems, charging, starting, and computer control systems.
    3. Hydraulic, electric, and air brake systems, including ABS diagnosis and repairs.
  5. Utilizes the electronic work order system to create work orders, order parts as needed for repairs and track maintenance history.
  6. Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.

A typical way of obtaining the knowledge, skills and abilities outlined is one year of related experience or Associate’s Degree in automotive Fleet Technicians; or an equivalent combination of experience and training.  

Candidates must possess the knowledge of safety practices and procedures related to full-service automotive and diesel/combustion engine maintenance and repair.  Successful candidates will also possess the knowledge of and abilities to utilize the tools and diagnostic testing equipment used in the maintenance of gas and diesel engines.  Must be able to interpret technical maintenance manuals, maintain accurate records and communicate effectively with internal and external customers. 

Preference will be given to candidates with experience using diagnostic tools and/or experience in welding, fabrication and heavy equipment repair.

Special Requirements:

  • Candidates must possess a valid Oregon Driver’s License and have or be able to obtain a Commercial Driver License (CDL) within 6 months of hire.
  • Must have or be able to obtain an Oregon Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) Fleet Vehicle Emission Inspector License within 6 months of hire.
  • Additional licensing may be required. 
  • Must be able to perform work in inclement weather; work ‘on call’ and varying shifts; and work cooperatively with other employees. Hiring is contingent upon successful completion of a Physical Capacity Exam (PCE).

This position works primarily during routine daytime hours. However, responses to emergencies or construction schedules will require some nighttime, weekend, and holiday work activity.

Non-cash compensation includes medical, dental, vision, PERS employee pick up, and VEBA contribution.

Bilingual Pay: Employees who can speak and/or write a language listed in the top five (5) most common languages spoken in the Lake Oswego School District, may be eligible for three percent (3%) bilingual pay.
