What are the responsibilities and job description for the SWIM INSTRUCTOR position at CITY OF GRAND ISLAND?
DEFINITION
Teach various strokes, swimming skills and water safety to students of all ages and with various swimming experience in accordance with American Red Cross guidelines.
Responsible for instructing group swim classes with the objective of advancing swimmers through established skill levels and assisting swimmers in achieving individual goals. Ensure an environment that provides systematic development of swimming and character skills. Work with other swimming instructors to ensure optimal instruction is provided to participants in accordance with individual needs.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives general supervision from the Aquatics Manager and/or the Aquatics Supervisor.
Exercises no supervision.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Display honest, trustworthy, and ethical behavior when dealing with internal and external customers.
Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Regular attendance that is punctual and dependable is required.
Teach various strokes swimming skills and water safety to students of all ages and with various swimming experience in accordance with Red Cross guidelines.
Enforce pool regulations during class hours and assist in policing the pool area.
Plan the class schedule for age group, skill level classes. Utilize information on swimming skill development to plan an effective instruction program.
Assist swimmers in progressing through skill levels. Observe and correct errors and focuses on the development of correct swimming techniques.
Review progress toward goals and obtains input from staff members, peers, and mentors to ensure optimal growth and improvement of swimmers.
Ensure the safety of participants. Develop safety rules and guidelines and monitors swimmers to help prevent accidents. Inspect deck area and equipment daily for safety hazards.
Handle emergencies appropriately applying First Aid as necessary.
Maintain attendance rolls and submit reports to management as required.
Assist and/or train other instructors as needed.
Attend staff meetings.
Maintain accurate attendance records and submit them appropriately.
Keep management informed of activities and of any significant problems.
Ensure requests and problems are promptly addressed and resolved.
Project a positive and professional image to parents and the public.
Ensure swimming areas are clean, secure, and well maintained.
Complete special projects as assigned.
Qualifications:Knowledge of:
Thorough knowledge and possession of swimming skills.
Excellent planning and organization skills.
Muscle anatomy, exercise physiology, stroke mechanics, child psychology, and nutrition.
Ability to:
Convey swimming skills to others.
Teach and motivate students.
Work well with others.
Operate all related equipment.
Deal with a variety of variables under only limited standardization.
Interpret various instructions.
Perform basic math skills, use decimals to compute ratios and percent's, and to draw and interpret graphs.
EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING GUIDELINES:
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. Must be 16 years of age.
Licenses and Certifications:
Possession of, or ability to obtain, an American Red Cross WSI Certification or pass the Grand Island Parks & Recreation water instructor course.
Working Hours:
Hours will vary Monday through Friday 9:00am -8:00pm depending on department needs but will include working days, evenings, weekends and holidays.
The duration of this position is Memorial Day through the end of August.
Salary:
Position will start at the entry level of the City's salary table. Consideration may be given if experience exceeds entry level qualifications.

Salary : $17 - $17
