The City of Eustis is seeking a trustworthy, responsible individual who, under the supervision of the Aquatics Manager, performs professional duties in ensuring effective performance of lifeguard functions.  Assists in hiring, training, scheduling, and evaluating lifeguards.  Ensures that lifesaving certification is current and that all lifeguards are fully competent in performing water rescue procedures and coordinates in ensuring safety of patrons in and around the pools and monitoring swimmers and to enforce all safety rules.  Performs general chemical maintenance and custodial upkeep of the facility to ensure a safe and sanitary public environment.

Examples of Machines, Tools and Equipment Used:

Basic water safety equipment; basic pool equipment such as chair lifts, pool covers and rollers, lane lines, sound system; pool operations equipment including motors, pumps, impellers, chemical control equipment, pool filtration system equipment; janitorial equipment; pool chemicals. 

Supervision Received: Aquatics Manager
  • Manages all aspects of the Aquatic Center in absence of Aquatics Manager;
  • Performs all lifeguard responsibilities including monitoring pool activities, applying first aid, and performing water rescues as necessary;
  • Ensures that swimmers are well-supervised in the pool and on decks. Fills in for lifeguards as necessary. Enforces all pool and water safety rules;
  • Orients new lifeguards to job duties and responsibilities. Ensures that all lifeguards are current on their training and certifications;
  • Teaches swimming, lifesaving and other water related instructional classes to all age groups, including children;
  • Assist with scheduling, coordinating and conducting in-service training. Ensures that lifeguards are fully competent in first aid, CPR, and all water rescue techniques;
  • Assists with the scheduling of lifeguards to ensure that adequate coverage of pool areas are maintained during operating hours;
  • Ensures that lifeguards perform in accordance with established safety regulations and policies;
  • Interfaces with patrons regarding concerns, problems, or any other significant issues. Provides input and feedback while responding to problems;
  • Ensures that aquatic programs are occurring as desired and assists with the overall management of swimming events;
  • Cleans and maintains pool, pool decks, pool furniture and all pool equipment;
  • Performs minor repair to pool and pool equipment and keeps the Aquatics Manager well informed of major maintenance and/or replacement work;
  • Performs various tests to check the chemical content of the water and adds pool chemicals to ensure necessary adjustments for the sanitation, clarity and physical preservation of the pool; maintains chemical logs as required;
  • Inventories and recognizes when supplies or equipment need to be ordered and communicates the needs to the Aquatics Manager. 

 Other Job Functions:
  • Assists the City in the preparation for and aftermath of a major emergency, such as a hurricane or other storm or disaster.
  • Performs other related duties as required. 
Knowledge, Abilities and Skills:
  • Working knowledge of lifesaving techniques including backboard rescue, CPR and first aid. 
  • Strong swimming and lifesaving abilities. 
  • Ability to communicate effectively with patrons, supervisors, and other employees. 
  • Ability to remain alert, attentive, and responsible. 
  • Ability to be a team player. 
  • Must be willing to work mornings, mid-day, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Familiarity with all systems, equipment, and chemicals required to contain, circulate, filter, heat, and treat pool water.
  • Basic knowledge of the mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic concepts involved in the functioning of an institutional swimming pool.

Ability to perform preventative maintenance and basic repair of the pool and pool equipment. Knowledge of water safety and lifesaving instruction; knowledge of swimming methods and techniques; knowledge of the needs of different age groups; knowledge of current lifesaving techniques and procedures; knowledge of principles and techniques of CPR and first aid.  

Ability to provide instruction and training to people of all age groups; ability to swim strongly and handle frightened or injured persons in the water; ability to react quickly and calmly in emergency situations; ability to enforce orders firmly but tactfully; ability to remain alert over long periods of time; ability to maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, employees, and the general public; ability to work rotating hours including nights and weekends.  

Skill in swimming; skill in swimming instruction; skill in lifesaving rescues and techniques.  Must pass swimming assessment test at time of interview (150-yard freestyle swim–2-minute water tread–50-yard freestyle swim sequence; timed brick retrieval swim.  Must pass rescue and techniques assessment test at time of interview (perform active rescue; perform passive rescue; timed deep water submerged victim rescue with CPR). 

Working Hours:
This is a full-time position.  Shifts may rotate depending on needs, as Aquatic Center hours and programming vary by season.  Employee must have the ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, and some holidays.


Minimum Qualifications:
Current Water Safety Instructor (WSI) and current Red Cross Lifeguard (includes CPR/First Aid/AED) certificates required. High School Diploma or recognized equivalent, or a recognized ability to read and write English required. At least one (1) year WSI/Lifeguard experience required.  Certification as an Aquatic Facility Operator (AFO) or Certified Pool/Spa Operator (CPO) or the ability to obtain either within six (6) months of hire required.  At least (1) year of experience in pool operation and maintenance required.  Must have a valid Florida Driver’s License with an acceptable driving record.Physical Demands:
This is continual light work and occasional heavy work.  Requires frequent walking and standing for long periods of time; frequently required to sit, talk and hear.  The employee is occasionally required to climb, balance, stoop, bend, kneel, crawl, swim and reach with hands and arms; lifting 50 pounds and carrying/pushing/pulling 50 pounds; good finger/hand dexterity and hand/eye coordination; good eyesight, hearing and speech; working in adverse environmental conditions (heat, cold, rain, etc.) for long periods of time. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus. 
 
While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and pool mechanical systems.  The employee occasionally is exposed to wet and dry conditions, fumes, toxic or caustic chemicals.  The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet while in the office and moderately loud when in the facility.  The employee may be exposed to stressful situations as a result of human behavior. 

Salary Information:
$21.7827 per hour ($45,308.05 annually); EXCELLENT benefits (Note: See Benefits Tab for more information).  Applicants should expect a starting salary of $21.7827. Only applicants with the most job-related qualifications will be selected for interview and further consideration.  Additional consideration may be given to applicants with more extensive education, training, or experience.  Following a thorough background investigation, including a criminal history and driver’s license check, the candidate will be given a conditional offer of employment.  The final candidate will be required to pass a drug test and medical exam.
