What are the responsibilities and job description for the Waste Management Worker position at City of Chesapeake?
The Waste Management Division of Public Works is seeking dependable and self-motivated individuals to deliver essential quality services to the citizens of Chesapeake. The candidate selected for this position will pick up refuse cans from houses and/or business establishments and will dump the refuse into truck; will clear the refuse areas of loose debris and return cans, will operate packer equipment as needed to make room for additional refuse in the truck.
Duties include:
- directing traffic around the refuse truck and assisting the driver to avoid accidents.
- cleaning refuse truck and equipment.
- ensuring safety of refuse collection including wearing protective equipment, inspecting cans before handling, and watching for falling objects from the truck.
- and performing related tasks as necessary such as monitoring collection areas for children and adults.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: In addition to satisfying the vocational/educational standard, this class requires a minimum of one month of related, full-time equivalent experience.
SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES: May require a Forklift Certification within six (6) months of employment.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies.

In accordance with City policy, this position is deemed safety-sensitive. As such, applicants for this position are subject to pre-employment drug/alcohol testing after receiving a conditional offer of employment and may also be subject to random testing. This drug test includes testing for marijuana. Possession of a medical marijuana card will not excuse an applicant from the testing process; however, a test will not be considered positive for marijuana if a valid medical marijuana certification is presented unless the position requires a commercial driver’s license (CDL) or is a sworn law-enforcement officer/deputy.
