The City of Chesapeake, the second most populous city in Virginia, is seeking an adaptable, forward‑thinking Human Resources (HR) professional to serve as Deputy Director of HR, helping lead a department committed to exceptional service, continuous improvement, and organizational stewardship. The Deputy Director of Human Resources provides strategic and operational support to the Human Resources Director, assisting with the oversight of daily departmental operations and the delivery of a broad range of HR programs and services. This role works within broad organizational policy and guidelines to plan, implement, and assess HR initiatives; supervise assigned staff; resolve complex personnel issues; and ensure regulatory compliance across HR functions. The successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing one or more of the following functional areas of Human Resources: benefits, learning and development, employee relations/EEO, absence management and ADA, classification and compensation, HRIS, and/or talent acquisition.
Qualified candidates will possess a bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, public administration, or a closely related field and five or more years of related, full-time equivalent experience. Significant experience working in the public sector and PHR, SPHR, SHRM-SCP, and/or PSHRA-CP certification are preferred. CLRP, CCP, and/or CEBS certification are a plus. Candidates must be committed to exemplifying the City’s CARES (courteousness, attentiveness, resourcefulness, empowerment, and stewardship) standards.
