Job Description
The Chesapeake Expressway Division of Public Works is seeking dependable, customer focused individuals to join our team as Part-Time Toll Collectors. This position plays an important role in providing excellent customer service while ensuring the safe, efficient movement of traffic along the Chesapeake Expressway.

As a Part-Time Toll Collector, you will accurately collect tolls, assist motorists, maintain accurate cash records, and help create a safe and welcoming experience for thousands of drivers each day. Ideal candidates are reliable, detail oriented, comfortable working independently, and committed to delivering courteous service in a fast paced environment.

Essential Duties
  • Collect toll payments from motorists and accurately process cash transactions.
  • Receive, count, and account for toll revenue and change.
  • Assess and record the appropriate toll based on vehicle classification.
  • Maintain accurate records and balance cash collections in accordance with established procedures.
  • Provide courteous, professional customer service while responding to questions from the traveling public.
  • Monitor traffic flow and help promote the safe and efficient movement of vehicles through the toll plaza.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe tollbooth work area.
  • Follow established safety, cash handling, and operational procedures.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications
Vocational/Educational Requirement: Requires high school diploma or GED/HSE.

Experience: In addition to satisfying the vocational/education standards, this class requires a minimum of one month of related, full-time equivalent experience.

Special Requirements: Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. Emergency operations support work and work locations may be outside of normal job duties.

Preferred Qualifications
Experience in customer service and cash handling.

Special Instructions to Applicants
Chesapeake Expressway toll collectors work as essential (alpha) personnel in support of a 24 hour/day, 365-day/year operation, including holidays, weekends and during inclement weather events. Schedules are subject to change to meet the operational needs of the Chesapeake Expressway.

In accordance with City policy, this position is deemed safety-sensitive. As such, applicants for this position are subject to pre-employment drug/alcohol testing after receiving a conditional offer of employment and may also be subject to random testing. This drug test includes testing for marijuana. Possession of a medical marijuana card will not excuse an applicant from the testing process; however, a test will not be considered positive for marijuana if a valid medical marijuana certification is presented unless the position requires a commercial driver’s license (CDL) or is a sworn law-enforcement officer/deputy.
