ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Primary Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Performs grounds maintenance, i.e., mowing, weed eating, edging, blowing, pruning, planting, trimming, sodding.
- Inspects and prepares assigned tools and equipment for safe and efficient operating condition by inspecting prior to and after use.
- Utilizes various manual, gas, and handheld electrical tools and light duty equipment, i.e., chain saws, weed eaters, edger, tractors, mowers, hammers, shovels.
- Performs regular and preventive maintenance, and minor repair on assigned equipment.
- Performs assigned duties for a variety of city property, i.e., ball fields, parks, rights-of-way, public grounds, and vacant lots.
- Performs painting, cleaning, maintenance and repair on municipal property, structures, and facilities, i.e., playground equipment, fences, buildings.
- Cleans/clears debris and refuse from city property regularly.
MARGINAL FUNCTIONS
- Provides support for other parks and recreation functions as needed.
- May operate medium duty equipment upon demonstrating essential skill levels for safe and effective operation of assigned equipment.
- Cleans and/or clears debris and refuse from City properties regularly.
- Attends safety meetings according to department policy.
- Performs related work as directed.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Regular and consistent attendance for the assigned work hours, Monday – Thursday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., is essential. Training and Experience:Minimum six (6) months to one (1) year of work experience that demonstrates the ability to safely and effectively operate a variety of light duty equipment associated with grounds maintenance or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Considerable working knowledge of potential hazards of the materials and equipment used in performing parks and grounds maintenance work.
- Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards, safety rules, practices, and precautions associated with performing duties including working in and/or around traffic and adverse weather conditions.
- Working knowledge of the various types of semi-skilled manual work performed in maintenance of municipal parks and grounds.
- Considerable working knowledge of the safe and effective operation of various types of manual, gas, or electrically powered tools, and light duty equipment used in the maintenance of municipal parks and grounds.
- Working knowledge of minor equipment maintenance and repair functions.
- Considerable working knowledge of safe and effective operation principles of some medium duty equipment used in the maintenance of municipal parks and grounds.
- Ability to receive, understand and follow oral or written directions.
- Ability to perform manipulative tasks requiring eye/hand/foot coordination.
- Ability to perform heavy manual tasks such as moving shrub debris and tree cuttings.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, fellow employees, and the public.

A. Physical Requirements
- Frequent walking over rough/uneven surfaces, standing, and stooping for extended periods of time.
- Some tasks involve some lifting and carrying of moderate weight (12-20 pounds) materials and supplies.
- Some takes involve regular, and at times sustained, lifting, carrying, pulling, pushing, and/or dragging heavy weight (20-50 pounds) of materials and supplies, and occasionally heavier (100 pounds).
- Some tasks require the operation of shop and hand tools, or vehicles in which manipulative skills and hand-eye coordination are important ingredients of safe/productive operations.
- Ability to use eyes, ears, hands, and fingers to perform assigned duties and responsibilities including the operation of vehicles, shop or hand tools in which manipulative skills and hand-eye coordination are important ingredients of safe/productive operations.
B. Environmental Requirements
- Ability to work outdoors in extreme temperatures including heat and cold.
- Exposure to adverse environmental conditions such as dirt, poison ivy and oak, strong odors and/or smoke, dust, or pollen.
- Exposure to extreme weather conditions including rain, cold and inclement weather.
- Some tasks may require exposure to strong and/or toxic chemicals.
C. Sensory Requirements
- Some tasks may require sound, odor, depth and/or visual perception and discrimination.
- Some tasks may require oral communications ability.
