Under the supervision of the Pool Manager, Lifeguards play a crucial role in ensuring the safety of patrons while providing a great experience at the pool. You'll monitor activities, enforce pool rules, and respond to emergencies with quick efficiency. Strong swimming skills and the ability to stay alert and prepared are essential, along with a commitment to delivering top-notch customer service. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Observe and maintain constant surveillance of swimmers from assigned areas including guard stand or poolside.
- Ensure the safety of facility patrons by strictly but courteously enforcing all pool rules and regulations.
- Recognize and respond to emergencies, including water rescues and first aid situations.
- Provide appropriate emergency and rescue techniques including CPR, first aid, and emergency care as needed
- Interact with and educate patrons on water safety and facility policies.
- Complete and submit to the pool manager, accurate incident and accident reports of injuries, accidents, and assistance rendered to patrons.
- Inspect and maintain rescue and pool equipment and safety supplies.
- Monitor and document water quality to ensure that the pool water maintains a proper chemical balance.
- Keep aquatic areas, including the pool area, clean and hazard free.
- Clean restrooms to maintain a clean and sanitary facility.
- Attend mandatory in-service training and perform all lifesaving skills as required.
- Work as part of a team to ensure a safe, welcoming environment.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Must be available to work holidays, weekends, or after hours for special events, or meetings as required.
- Regular and consistent attendance for the assigned work hours is essential. Time scheduled off should be managed so as to not interfere with the ability to accomplish tasks, including special projects and assignments.
- Dependable transportation to ensure the ability to meet assigned work schedule.
Age Requirement:
- Must be at least 16 years of age by start date.
Education, Training and Experience:
- Previous lifeguarding or aquatic experience is preferred but not required.
- Experience working with children or the public.
- Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
Licenses and Certificates:
- Current Lifeguard Certification (American Red Cross, Ellis, or equivalent) required or must be able to obtain by start date.
- Current CPR/AED and First Aid certification is required or must be able to obtain by start date.
Knowledge of:
Pool safety practices and procedures, current techniques of emergency action protocols for lifeguarding, first aid, and CPR.
Skill/Ability to:
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships and rapport with employees, volunteers, supervisors, and the general public; learn equipment and supply use and care; follow established rules, guidelines.
- Obtain First Aid and Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation certification.
- Swim long distances and perform rescues.
- Lift and carry rescue equipment or individuals.
- Prolonged standing, walking, and exposure to sun and water.
- Handle requests, inquiries and complaints in a cooperative and constructive manner.
- Work outdoors and under a variety of weather conditions and work irregular hours; Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
- Work weekends and evenings.
- Must pass pre-employment drug screen, physical and swim tests.
Physical Requirements include but are not limited to:
- Visual and auditory sensory perception.
- Excellent swimming skills to include rescue techniques.
- During rescue operations or training, it will be required to lift, carry, pull and/or push a person, with assistance if needed.
- Frequent sitting, standing or walking for extended periods of time.
- Constant alert and careful viewing of pool.
- Occasional strenuous physical activity, including carrying, pulling, pushing, dragging, and holding up to 30 lbs. of furniture/equipment.
- Daytime, evening, weekend, and/or holiday shifts are possible.
- Exposure to large crowds and noises are possible.
- Exposure to extreme temperature variations and other weather conditions are possible.
- Some tasks require exposure to strong and/or toxic chemicals.
