๐๏ธ Position OverviewThe General Engineer will be responsible for independently managing and supporting a wide range of engineering functions including planning, design development, construction oversight, and facility system evaluation. This role requires strong technical expertise, sound engineering judgment, and the ability to resolve complex and often competing design and operational requirements.
You will provide professional engineering oversight across major projects, working closely with architects, contractors, facility leadership, and multidisciplinary stakeholders.
๐ฏ Key Responsibilities๐ง Development & Planning- Determine project requirements, conduct site reconnaissance, and develop engineering designs, specifications, and cost estimates
- Perform surveys and investigations to establish baseline data for design development
- Evaluate technical data and integrate findings into engineering solutions
- Perform complex engineering calculations and determine most efficient and cost-effective design approaches
- Apply engineering standards while resolving conflicts between design intent and operational constraints
- Provide engineering oversight during construction, renovation, and maintenance projects
- Inspect materials, methods, equipment, and contractor work for compliance with specifications
- Prepare cost estimates, schedules, technical reports, correspondence, and project documentation
- Coordinate with contractors to resolve unforeseen conditions and field issues
- Review and evaluate shop drawings, submittals, materials, and construction documentation
- Develop and implement corrective design solutions as needed during construction
- Develop in-house engineering designs, drawings, and specifications
- Establish design criteria and scopes of work for AE firms
- Review, approve, or reject AE design deliverables for compliance with VA standards
- Provide direction on change orders and design modifications
- Ensure adherence to VA engineering, safety, and construction standards
- Implement and monitor OSHA, life safety, and environmental health standards
- Ensure compliance with hazardous materials handling, waste management, and fire protection requirements
- Support emergency preparedness and security planning initiatives
- Promote infection control and patient safety within healthcare environments
- Ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local environmental regulations
- Provide responsive, professional service to Veterans, staff, contractors, and stakeholders
- Communicate technical information clearly and respectfully across all levels
- Resolve conflicts and construction issues in a constructive and solution-oriented manner
- Support VA mission through effective coordination and teamwork
- Safeguard sensitive data in accordance with VA privacy and security regulations
- Ensure proper handling of electronic and physical records
- Follow all cybersecurity and access control procedures
- Minimum 7 years of General Engineering experience
- Bachelorโs degree in Engineering required
- Strong knowledge of healthcare facility design and construction practices
- Familiarity with fire codes, building codes, barrier-free design standards, and safety regulations
- Ability to interpret blueprints, specifications, and technical documents
- Strong communication skills (written and verbal) with contractors, engineers, and leadership
- Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred
- Experience with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, Access)
- Experience with Microsoft Project and Revit (preferred)
- Familiarity with VA systems such as VISTA is a plus
- Experience in healthcare or federal facility environments strongly preferred
