Job Summary:
Plans organize and conduct breastfeeding support and education for the WIC program to emphasize the optimum nutrition for infants. Coordinates breastfeeding activities with WIC staff, Cherokee Nation health clinics, and Indian Health Services. Provides staff supervision and training to clinics located in Indian Health Service facilities.
Job Duties:
Develops and implements an annual breastfeeding promotion and support plan for the Cherokee Nation WIC program as required by rules and regulations. Serves as a coordinator for breastfeeding promotion and management for the hospital OB/GYN clinics, OB wards, pediatric clinics, local Leche League and other community organization which promote and support breastfeeding. Plans and conducts breastfeeding education classes for pregnant and breastfeeding women at assigned areas. Provides direct in-hospital education and support to breastfeeding women and documents in medical charts. Develops and implements a peer support group. Design brochures, pamphlets, charts, and other materials to augment lectures on breastfeeding education and management to community groups. Prioritizes the distribution of supplies and equipment and provides training for their use. Reviews and makes a recommendation on breastfeeding education and management supplies and equipment. Provides on-going training to WIC professionals and paraprofessionals on current information and trends in breastfeeding. Maintain HIPAA compliance and confidentiality at all times and protect all personal health information (PHI) as it relates to patient data. Other duties may be assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Manages 1-2 subordinate supervisors that supervise 1 to 4 employees in the assigned area. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Qualifications:
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT
Bachelor's degree from four-year College or university in a nutrition-related field; or six years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT

An additional two (2) years of experience is required with one year being in an area of lactation management or education.

COMPUTER SKILLS

An individual should know Accounting software; Internet software; Spreadsheet software; and Word Processing software.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Must possess a valid driver's license with a driving history verified through a motor vehicle report that meets requirements for Cherokee Nation underwriting rating. Must be certified or eligible for certification in an approved breastfeeding educator program and maintain certification throughout employment.

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS

Employee must not be and will not be under sanction by the United States Department of Health and Human Services Office of the Inspector General (OIG) or by the General Services Administration (GSA) or listed on the OIG’s Cumulative Sanction Report, or the GSA’s List of Excluded Providers; or listed on the OIG’s List of Excluded Individuals/Entities (LEIE).

Educated on and compliant with HIPAA regulations; maintains strict confidentiality of client information. Must meet and maintain periodic background investigation and adjudication for child care.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to sit. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; and taste or smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
