The Breastfeeding Peer Counselor (BFPC) provides compassionate, culturally sensitive support and encouragement to breastfeeding individuals and their families. This role is dedicated to promoting and supporting breastfeeding by sharing personal experiences, evidence-based information, and practical guidance. BFPCs operate within a defined scope of practice based on their training, education, and certification, and are responsible for delivering services in alignment with program goals and standard.
Job Duties:
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provide ongoing breastfeeding support to pregnant and breastfeeding individuals, drawing from extended experience in the role.
- Refer high-risk or complex cases to the Designated Breastfeeding Expert or Lactation Coordinator.
- Issue breast pumps and related supplies as needed, in accordance with program guidelines.
- Identify situations requiring clinical intervention and refer to appropriate healthcare professionals.
- Conduct comprehensive assessments of mothers and children related to breastfeeding and lactation.
- Evaluate nutrition risks, determine participant eligibility, and prescribe appropriate food packages.
- Deliver responsive, participant-centered nutrition education and breastfeeding counseling.
- Inform applicants of their rights and responsibilities within the program.
- Monitor and document breastfeeding progress, including feeding patterns, infant cues, weight gain, and stooling.
- Assist breastfeeding parents in setting goals and developing individualized care plans.
- Provide evidence-based information on breastfeeding, medications, and complementary therapies.
- Demonstrate proper use of breastfeeding aids and distribute educational materials as appropriate.
- Maintain accurate documentation and ensure timely communication with the care team.
- Travel to and from participant locations as needed to carry out assigned duties and provide support services.
- Additional duties and responsibilities may be assigned by the designated supervisor.
LEVEL OF RESPONSIBILITY
- Performs work under general supervision.
- Possesses solid working knowledge of subject matter.
- May provide leadership, coaching and/or mentoring to subordinate group.
QUALIFICATIONS
- High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED); or six months related experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Three (3) years of experience in a related field.
- Must hold a Certified Lactation Consultant (CLC) credential or an equivalent certification, such as Certified Breastfeeding Specialist (CBS) or Certified Breastfeeding Counselor (CBC).

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
- Must possess a valid driver’s license with a driving history verified through a motor vehicle report that meets requirements for Cherokee Nation underwriting rating.
- Must obtain Basic Life Support (BLS) and/or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification within six (6) months of hire and maintain current certification throughout the duration of employment.
