About the Job:
If you love working with kids and teens and want to make a meaningful impact after school each day, this role is right up your alley. As a CU Special Recreation Afterschool Program Leader, you’ll support youth with a wide range of abilities through hands-on activities, engaging curriculum, and a strong focus on safety and inclusion. You’ll help create a positive, structured environment where participants can learn, grow, and have fun at our Champaign and Urbana program sites.

Summary of Responsibilities

  • Lead fun, inclusive activities—crafts, games, outdoor play, cooking—aligned with seasonal curriculum.
  • Support the physical, emotional, and social well-being of all participants.
  • Enforce program expectations and maintain a safe, positive environment.
  • Supervise participants during transitions, free play, field trips, and higher-risk activities, including water-based components.
  • Provide first aid within training scope and maintain first aid supplies.
  • Keep accurate attendance, documentation, incident reports, and communication logs.
  • Maintain organized, clean program spaces and manage supplies responsibly.
  • Communicate regularly with the Afterschool Program Director and Youth & Teen Program Coordinator regarding participant needs or concerns.
  • Attend meetings and complete required trainings.
  • Uphold confidentiality, professionalism, and all Park District policies.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • At least 18 years old (21 preferred for positions requiring participant driving).
  • Interest in working with youth and individuals with disabilities.
  • Availability during afterschool hours throughout the school year
  • Experience assisting with or leading structured youth programs, preferred.

Why Work With Us?

You won’t just clock in and supervise, you’ll actively shape kids’ afternoons and help them build confidence, friendships, and independence. This is hands-on, mission-driven work that develops real skills: behavior support, communication, leadership, and inclusive recreation experience. It’s a great fit for anyone exploring education, special recreation, social services, or youth development careers.
