The Child Welfare Specialist provides foster care case management and social services to children, foster families, and biological families with the goal of achieving safety, stability, and permanency. This position is responsible for developing service plans, preparing court documents, monitoring child and family progress, and coordinating needed services. Duties include conducting home and community visits, arranging and supervising family visitation, ensuring children’s medical and mental health needs are addressed, and maintaining accurate documentation in compliance with DCFS and agency standards. The role requires regular on-call responsibilities to respond to emergencies.
Key Responsibilities – Child Welfare Specialist
- Provide case management services for children in foster care, biological families, and foster families to support safety, well-being, and permanency goals.
- Prepare court reports, attend hearings, and provide testimony as required.
- Develop and implement service plans within required timelines and monitor progress toward goals.
- Conduct home and community visits to assess safety, risk, and family functioning.
- Document all contacts and case activity accurately and timely in SACWIS (DCFS system).
- Coordinate referrals and services with community providers to meet children’s and families’ needs.
- Arrange and supervise family visitations, including transportation when necessary.
- Monitor children’s medical, mental health, and educational needs, ensuring referrals and follow-ups are completed.
- Participate in on-call rotation and respond to emergencies as required.
- Maintain compliance with agency policies, DCFS requirements, and accreditation standards.
- Attend required trainings and maintain professional growth in child welfare practices.

Skill Based Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree, preferred in Human Service Field
- Experience working with children and/or families preferred
- Valid driver’s license and eligibility to transport clients per DCFS requirements
- Proof of current auto insurance (if using personal vehicle)
- Must pass a drug screen, medical exam, TB test, and criminal background check
- Ability to maintain confidentiality, professionalism, and clear communication
