Position: Part-Time Custodian
Schedule: Monday–Friday (5 days per week)
Hours: Part-time, hours after 5:30pm OR before 6:30am
Location: Kalamazoo, Michigan
Reports To: Preschool Director

Position Summary

Starting Point Preschool is seeking a dependable, detail-oriented Part-Time Custodian to help maintain a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for children, families, and staff.

The custodian will be responsible for routine cleaning of six classrooms, six bathrooms, and common areas throughout the facility. The ideal candidate takes pride in their work, works efficiently and independently, and understands the importance of cleanliness in an early childhood education setting.

Essential Job Responsibilities

Daily Cleaning Responsibilities

• Vacuum and/or sweep classroom floors, hallways, and common areas.
• Mop hard-surface floors, ensuring floors are swept or vacuumed before mopping.
• Clean and sanitize six bathrooms, including toilets, sinks, countertops, and floors.
• Clean six classrooms, focusing on floors, visible dirt, spills, and maintaining a sanitary environment.
• Empty trash cans throughout the building and replace liners as needed.
• Remove trash and dispose of it in designated outdoor containers.
• Check cleaning areas for spills, debris, or other concerns requiring attention.
• Properly clean, store, and maintain custodial supplies and equipment.

Periodic Cleaning Responsibilities

To be completed on a rotating schedule or as needed.

• Wash interior windows and glass doors.
• Wipe down and disinfect door handles, light switches, and other frequently touched surfaces.
• Thoroughly clean sinks, faucets, and drinking fountains.
• Clean baseboards, corners, and other areas where dirt and dust accumulate.
• Spot-clean walls, doors, and other surfaces.
• Perform additional deep-cleaning tasks as assigned.

Qualifications

• Previous custodial or commercial cleaning experience preferred but not required.
• Ability to work independently and manage time effectively.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to maintaining high cleanliness standards.
• Dependable attendance and consistent work performance.
• Ability to follow cleaning procedures and safely use cleaning products and equipment.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism in a childcare environment.
• Must meet applicable background screening requirements for working in a licensed childcare facility.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, and reach throughout the shift.
• Ability to lift and carry cleaning supplies, trash bags, and equipment (up to 25 pounds).
• Ability to operate vacuum cleaners, mops, and other standard custodial equipment.
• Ability to perform repetitive cleaning tasks.

Expectations

The custodian is expected to maintain a consistent standard of cleanliness throughout the facility, complete assigned daily responsibilities, and follow established cleaning and disinfecting procedures.

Because Starting Point Preschool serves young children, special attention must be given to restroom cleanliness, floor sanitation, and the safe handling and storage of cleaning chemicals.
