School Adjustment Counselor

Position Overview The School Adjustment Counselor plays a vital role in supporting the academic, social, and emotional success of students. This individual provides counseling services, crisis intervention, and family outreach while working collaboratively with school staff to create a safe, supportive, and inclusive learning environment. The counselor will also coordinate with community resources to ensure students and families have access to the supports they need. ________________________________________ Qualifications •Master’s degree in Adjustment Counseling, Social Work, Counseling, Psychology, or a related field. •Strong knowledge of trauma-informed care, adolescent development, and crisis intervention. •Experience working in schools or with children/adolescents in clinical settings preferred. •Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and communicate effectively with students, families, and staff. •Commitment to equity, inclusion, and culturally responsive practices. ________________________________________ Key Responsibilities Direct Student Support •Assess students’ social, emotional, and behavioral needs at the Tier 1 level. •Provide individual and group counseling to students experiencing trauma, grief, mental health concerns, family challenges, or school adjustment difficulties (Tier 2 & 3 supports). •Intervene in crisis situations, including threats to safety, self-harm, or abuse/neglect concerns. •File 51A reports when deemed necessary by the Student Support Team. Collaboration & Family Engagement •Partner with teachers, counselors, administrators, and staff to address barriers to student learning and success. •Connect students and families with community resources (mental health services, housing, food assistance, etc.). •Participate actively in weekly Student Support Team meetings. Planning & Program Development •Contribute to Behavior Intervention Plans and support school-wide positive behavior initiatives. •Implement school-wide initiatives around mental health awareness, bullying prevention, SEL, and conflict resolution. •Collect, analyze, and share data to measure the effectiveness of interventions and inform future practices. Administrative Responsibilities •Maintain accurate, timely, and confidential records of services provided. •Prepare reports for internal teams or outside agencies as required. •Supervise and support social work interns, when applicable. ________________________________________ Core Competencies •Empathy and strong relationship-building skills with adolescents. •Skilled in de-escalation and crisis management. •Strong organizational and record-keeping skills. •Knowledge of culturally responsive and restorative practices. •Ability to balance individual student needs with school-wide initiatives.
