General Description
The Millwright is responsible for the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of mechanical equipment used in hog slaughter, processing, fabrication, and packaging operations. This position plays a critical role in ensuring production efficiency, equipment reliability, food safety compliance, and workplace safety in a USDA-inspected meat processing environment.
Job Duties
- Install, maintain, repair, and overhaul industrial machinery and equipment used in slaughter, processing, fabrication, and packaging operations
- Troubleshoot mechanical issues involving conveyors, pumps, motors, gearboxes, hydraulics, pneumatics, plumbing, electrical equipment, and processing equipment
- Perform preventive and corrective maintenance to minimize downtime and support continuous production
- Align, level, and calibrate machinery using precision tools
- Read and interpret manuals and work orders
- Support production changeovers and respond to urgent equipment failures
- Perform equipment repairs in washdown and food-grade environments
- Follow lockout/tagout and other safety procedures
- Ensure all repairs and modifications comply with USDA, GMP, and food safety requirements
- Work collaboratively with operations, sanitation, and quality teams
- Maintain accurate maintenance records and documentation
- Assist with installation and commissioning of new equipment
- Participate in scheduled shutdowns and emergency repairs as needed
- Perform intermediate electrical work, including:
- Troubleshooting motors, VFDs, PLUs, HMIs, and sensors
- Replacing and wiring motors, photo eyes, limit switches, proximity sensors, and safety devices
- Reading and interpreting electrical schematics and wiring diagrams
Physical Requirements/ Working Conditions
- Frequent standing, walking, bending, and climbing
- Ability to lift up to 75-100 lbs, with assistance when required
- Exposure to cold temperatures, wet conditions, noise, and moving machinery
- Required use of PPE, including cut-resistant gear and hearing protection
- Work performed in production, fabrication, kitchen, and slaughter areas
- Minimum of 2 years of industrial maintenance or millwright experience
- Fabrication and welding experience preferred
- Experience working in food manufacturing, meat processing, or slaughter facilities preferred
- Strong mechanical and electrical troubleshooting skills
- Ability to work in wet, cold, and washdown environments
- Knowledge of safety procedures, including lockout/tagout
- Ability to work flexible schedules and overtime when needed
