The Audio Visual Specialist supports organizational communications by creating, producing, and managing high-quality visual and audio content. This role develops digital assets for social media, marketing campaigns, public outreach, and internal communications. Responsibilities include filming and editing video, capturing photography, producing graphics, coordinating live or recorded events, and ensuring brand consistency across all platforms. This position works closely with the Digital Composition Specialist III.

Working Conditions

In Office: This position supports and manages the day-to-day business operations for Cal OES which is handled in an office location. This is not considered a hybrid telework position.

DMV Pull Program: Participation in the DMV Pull Program is required. The position(s) require(s) a valid Driver’s License (DL). You must answer the questions addressing your DL on your application. Ensure you provide your DL number, class, expiration date, and any endorsements and/or restrictions.

The California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES) is an emergency response, homeland security, and disaster recovery agency and as a result, is a dynamic and exciting place to work in a team-oriented environment. Cal OES provides training to enhance the understanding of emergency and incident management to all employees.

The Planning, Preparedness, and Prevention Directorate develops and maintains statewide plans and planning guidance for local emergency management, state agencies, and tribal governments, including specialized programs for radiological preparedness, dam safety, seismic hazards, and earthquake early warning. This directorate also includes the California Specialized Training Institute which provides exercise support and courses in emergency management, hazardous materials response, criminal justice/officer safety, fire & rescue, and crisis communications.

In the event of an emergency, employees may be contacted and requested to report to work in the event of an emergency. This contact may be outside of your normal working hours (evenings/nights, weekends, and holidays). This service may require irregular work hours, work locations other than the official duty location, and may include duties other than those specified in your official position description. Travel requirements in support of emergency operations may be extensive in nature (weeks to months), with little advance notice, and you may be required to relocate to emergency sites.

Desirable Qualifications

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:

  • Demonstrated experience producing high quality video, audio, and photographic content for social media, marketing, or public information purposes.
  • Proficiency in video editing and media production software (such as Adobe Premiere Pro, After Effects, Audition, Photoshop, Lightroom, or comparable tools).
  • Experience managing social media platforms, including content planning, posting, and basic analytics.
  • Strong understanding of digital marketing strategies, visual storytelling, and audience engagement best practices.
  • Ability to design visual assets, including graphics, motion graphics, and brand aligned templates.
  • Experience supporting live or recorded events, including setup and operation of cameras, lighting, microphones, and streaming equipment.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects, meet deadlines, and adapt to fast paced or high visibility environments.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with an ability to translate complex topics into clear, visual content.
  • Knowledge of accessibility standards for digital content (captioning, alt text, color contrast, etc.).
  • Ability to work collaboratively with communications, public affairs, leadership, and program teams.
  • This is a highly creative position.
