Summer Camp Nurse
Position Summary
The Summer Camp Nurse is responsible for promoting and maintaining the health, safety, and well-being of all students, campers, and staff. This role provides daily medical support, oversees health documentation, administers medications, responds to illnesses or injuries, and ensures compliance with all state licensing and health regulations. The nurse collaborates closely with teachers, camp staff, directors, and families to create a safe and supportive environment year-round.
Key Responsibilities
1. Daily Student/Camper Health Support
- Provide first aid and basic medical care for minor injuries, illnesses, and health concerns.
- Assess medical situations and determine whether emergency services or parent pickup is required.
- Monitor children with chronic conditions (asthma, allergies, diabetes, seizures, etc.).
- Communicate with families regarding health incidents, symptoms, or follow-up care.
2. Medication Administration
- Safely administer prescription and OTC medications according to state regulations.
- Maintain proper storage, labeling, and documentation of all medications.
- Train staff on EpiPen, inhaler, and emergency medication protocols.
3. Health Records & Compliance
- Manage and update all medical forms, immunization records, allergy lists, and care plans.
- Ensure compliance with NJ Department of Health, NJ DOE/DCF licensing requirements, and camp regulations.
- Conduct audits of student files and required health documentation before program start dates.
- Maintain confidential and organized health records.
4. Emergency Management
- Lead health-related emergency response and ensure staff follow safety procedures.
- Create and update emergency care plans for children with specific medical needs.
- Participate in drills and safety planning for school year and summer camp operations.
5. Health Education & Prevention
- Promote good hygiene, illness prevention, and wellness strategies within classrooms and camp groups.
- Monitor outbreaks (COVID-19, flu, stomach virus, etc.) and advise directors on protocols.
- Train staff on basic first aid and illness identification.
6. Summer Camp Responsibilities
- Establish a daily health station/check-in process.
- Oversee hydration, sunscreen application policies, and outdoor safety.
- Coordinate care during field trips, including medication transport and on-site safety.
7. Collaboration & Communication
- Communicate professionally and compassionately with parents regarding health needs.
- Work closely with directors on risk management and policy development.
- Support teachers and counselors with child-specific health information and accommodations.
Qualifications
- Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) in the State of New Jersey.
- Pediatric, school, or camp nursing experience preferred.
- CPR/AED & First Aid certification required.
- Strong organizational and communication skills.
- Ability to work independently, prioritize, and respond calmly in emergencies.
- Comfortable working in a busy, child-centered environment with frequent movement and quick decision-making.
Schedule
School Year:
- On-site during key hours (approx. 9am–3pm; flexible based on enrollment needs).
Summer Camp:
- Full-time or extended part-time during camp hours (approx. 8am–3:30pm).
Additional:
- Occasional staff training sessions, meetings, and family communication as needed.
