You'll join an experienced engineering and design team responsible for supporting transmission and distribution substation projects from concept through construction. This role partners closely with engineers, project managers, construction teams, field services, and equipment vendors to deliver high-quality substation design packages.

About the Role
Brooksource is seeking a Substation Physical Designer to support utility transmission and distribution infrastructure projects. In this role, you will create detailed 2D drawings and 3D models for electrical substations while collaborating with multidisciplinary engineering teams throughout the project lifecycle. This position offers the opportunity to contribute to critical infrastructure projects with a strong emphasis on safety, quality, standardization, and engineering excellence.
What You'll Do
- Develop detailed 2D design drawings and 3D models for transmission and distribution electrical substations using AutoCAD, Autodesk Inventor, and other design software.
- Produce physical design packages including foundation layouts, grounding plans, conduit layouts, switchgear assemblies, substation layouts, switch house layouts, and electrical bus designs.
- Prepare material specifications, bills of materials, and equipment packages for substation construction projects.
- Coordinate with engineers, project managers, field services, construction teams, and vendors to support project execution.
- Transmit completed engineering drawing packages and supporting documentation through document management systems.
- Participate in project site visits, pre-construction meetings, construction support activities, and post-construction reviews.
- Support design standardization initiatives while ensuring projects meet safety, quality, schedule, and budget expectations.
What You Bring
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering or Engineering Technology, OR Associate degree with 5 years of related experience, OR High school diploma with 8 years of relevant industry experience.
- Experience designing transmission and/or distribution electrical substations preferred.
- Proficiency with AutoCAD and experience using Autodesk Inventor, SDS Inventor, Autodesk Map 3D (P4A), or other 3D modeling software.
- Understanding of electrical substation equipment, utility grid operations, and basic power system theory.
- Familiarity with the National Electric Safety Code (NESC), National Electrical Code (NEC), and OSHA safety practices.
- Experience with document management systems, estimating software, Primavera P6, and Microsoft Office is preferred.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to explain technical concepts to diverse stakeholders.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and project deadlines.
- Self-motivated with excellent problem-solving abilities and a collaborative mindset.
- Willingness to travel approximately 25% for project support and field visits.
