Overview
We are seeking a strong, hands-on Engineering Design Manager to lead FIBER network design and engineering execution. This individual will play a critical role in transitioning all design and engineering functions in-house and will ultimately serve as the single point owner for design execution across their assigned network footprint.
Work Style
- Strong preference: In-office, embedded with engineers & CAD designers
- Hybrid option is possible after trust is established; Suggested 3 days minimum in office (Likely 90 days fully in office before hybrid is considered)
Core Responsibilities
People & Team Leadership
- Manage and develop a team of CAD Designers and Field Engineers (field data collection in-office CAD production).
- Build and mentor a long-term, career-oriented engineering team.
- Establish clear standards, accountability, and performance expectations.
Contractor & Vendor Oversight
- Oversee and manage third-party engineering firms.
- Evaluate performance, ensure quality deliverables, and close current oversight gaps.
- Transition outsourced functions to internal teams over time.
Design Quality & Risk Mitigation
- Oversee conceptual through final design packages.
- Identify and resolve issues prior to permitting to minimize risk.
- Reduce redesigns, cost overruns, and schedule delays through proactive review and quality control.
Jurisdictional Coordination
- Ensure early and ongoing engagement with counties, cities, and state agencies.
- Understand permitting and regulatory requirements upfront to prevent late-stage redesigns.
- Build and maintain strong working relationships with jurisdictional authorities.
Network & Route Planning
- Partner with the Engineering Manager on route planning, easement acquisition, and fiber route design.
- Take full ownership of design and engineering execution for one half of the network footprint.
Strategic Impact
This role is instrumental in bringing all design and engineering operations in-house. The selected individual will become the accountable leader for design execution across their assigned network region, ensuring scalable processes, improved quality, and reduced project risk.
Required Qualifications
- Strong AutoCAD Civil experience (essential)
- Min 4-5 years of experience with fiber network design specifically
- Proven leadership experience managing technical teams and earning trust across cross-functional groups.
- Experience overseeing engineering design quality from concept through final plans.
- Ability to operate effectively in aggressive, fast-paced, and evolving environments.
- Decisive, proactive, detail-oriented leadership style.
