What are the responsibilities and job description for the Data Center Regional Technician (Travel) position at Broadstaff?
We have a client seeking Data Center Regional Technicians/Engineers (LAYER 1).
**THIS POSITION REQUIRES REGIONAL/NATIONWIDE TRAVEL (away for weeks at a time, home for a week and then back at it) Must be willing to travel (expenses paid) 75-100%**
- Work is to be performed during maintenance windows (evening/night shifts)
- Typical schedule: arrival ~5PM, work window ~6PM–2AM
- Standard 40 hours/week travel work
- Convert to FTE from contract in 3-6 months
Core technical skills
- Reading and interpreting network diagrams, cut sheets, and patching schedules
- Identifying and working with copper and fiber types (Cat5e/6/6A, MM/SM fiber, connectors)
- Proper terminations (jacks, patch panels, fiber enclosures) to spec
- Labeling and documentation that match design and as-built requirements
- Use of test gear (certifiers, OTDR, light meters, toners) to validate links
- Basic Layer 1 troubleshooting (opens, shorts, reversals, cross-talk, dirty/bad fiber)
Cutover-specific skills
- Following a detailed MOP (method of procedure) step-by-step
- Executing patching changes in the correct order and within maintenance window
- Verifying path (IDF–MDF–rack–port) before making or moving any connection
- Supporting rollback plans if circuits fail validation after cutover
- Coordinating live turn-up testing with network engineers (pings, throughput, failover)
Standards and quality
- Working knowledge of TIA/EIA and BICSI best practices for structured cabling
- Maintaining bend radius, separation from power, and proper support (ladders, J?hooks, Velcro)
- Rack/stack basics: dressing patch cords, managing slack, maintaining airflow
- Ensuring all work meets site standards for labeling, color schemes, and pathway usage
Operational and safety skills
- Job site safety: ladders, lifts, PPE, confined spaces, power tools
- Time management to hit milestones inside tight maintenance windows
- Keeping accurate redlines and as-built updates during and after the cut
Communication and coordination
- Clear communication with NOC/engineers, project manager, and on-site stakeholders
- Escalating issues quickly with accurate, concise status updates
- Working calmly under pressure during outages or unexpected issues
