What are the responsibilities and job description for the System Administrator (Consultative / Strategic Focus) position at Bowman Williams?
System Administrator (Consultative / Strategic Focus)
📍 Columbia, MD (Hybrid) | 💰 $80K–$95K
We’re hiring a System Administrator who’s ready to step out of just tickets and into a more consultative, strategic role. This is a great fit for someone who’s grown through support/escalations and wants to start influencing client environments, not just fixing them.
You’ll act as a trusted technical advisor across a set of clients—owning documentation, understanding environments deeply, and helping guide long-term IT decisions while still staying hands-on when needed.
What You’ll Do
- Own and document client environments (systems, network, cloud)
- Perform discovery, assessments, and identify gaps or risks
- Partner with leadership and vCIOs on recommendations and roadmaps
- Act as the go-to technical resource for assigned clients
- Collaborate with support, projects, and leadership teams
What You Bring
- Must have recent experience working in the MSP (Managed Services Provider) industry
- Strong background in systems networking (Windows, M365, Azure)
- Experience with escalations (Tier 2/2.5/3 level)
- Solid documentation and troubleshooting skills
- Comfortable talking to clients and explaining technical concepts
- Interested in moving toward consulting and strategy
Nice to Have
- Experience in a client-facing or advisory role (TAM, Project Engineer, Jr. vCIO)
- Exposure to security frameworks (CIS, NIST)
- Onboarding or environment standardization experience
Why This Role
- Move out of pure support into strategy consulting
- Clear path toward vCIO / advisory roles
- Strong benefits (100% healthcare coverage, bonuses, PTO, 401k match)
If you’re at that point where you understand the tech and want more say in how environments are built and improved, this is that next step.
