Position Summary
Blue Ridge Energy is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Test and Maintenance Technician to help power the communities we serve. In this role, you'll be hands-on with the equipment that keeps our system running-supporting the construction, maintenance, testing, and operation of transmission and distribution substations and line devices across our system.
This position offers the opportunity to work with advanced technology, solve complex challenges, and play a direct role in maintaining the safety, reliability, and performance of our electrical infrastructure.
What You'll Do
- Provide excellent service through safe, high-quality workmanship and technical expertise
- Inspect, test, maintain, and repair substation equipment and line devices across the system
- Partner with Engineering Services on inspections and preventative maintenance efforts
- Install, inspect, and maintain control systems, including relays and electronic controls
- Support installation and maintenance of AMR/AMI substation equipment
- Assist with substation wiring, switching, testing, and commissioning
- Troubleshoot and repair specialized testing equipment such as relay and recloser test sets
- Maintain accurate electronic records for testing and maintenance activities
- Serve as a technical resource for district personnel
- Assist with mobile substation setup, including participation in statewide cooperative support
- Support crane and rigging operations in energized substations
- Assist with oil containment and environmental compliance per SPCC guidelines
- Maintain inventory of spare parts to support efficient repairs
What You Bring
- Associate degree in Electrical Engineering Technology, Electronics Engineering Technology, Mechatronics, or a related field (or equivalent experience)
- Experience in electric utility operations is a plus
- Background as an industrial electrician, maintenance mechanic, or electronics technician is highly desirable
- Experience programming microprocessor-based controls is preferred
Knowledge & Skills
- Strong understanding of electrical systems and mechanical principles, including hydraulics and pneumatics
- Ability to troubleshoot and repair complex equipment such as transformers and circuit breakers
- Knowledge of substation equipment and testing procedures, or the ability to quickly develop this expertise
- Strong computer skills, including experience with manufacturer software for relay settings and data retrieval
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook
- A strong commitment to safety and proper use of PPE when working around energized equipment
Work Schedule & Requirements
- Monday–Friday, 7:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m., with flexibility as needed
- May alternate between a 5-day/8-hour schedule and a 4-day/10-hour schedule
- Occasional overnight travel may be required
Licensing & Compliance
- Valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) required
- Safe driving record (past 7 years)
- Ability to pass ongoing DOT physicals and required drug screenings
- Position is subject to overtime requirements under the Fair Labor Standards Act
